    Paul,

What I wanted tyo say is that "supercharger" can not only mean a compressor directly driven by the engine, which is the meaning most used today, but any form of forced induction.

But yes indeed: the "Merlin" has a supercharger (or "mechanical blower" in the parlance of the day), that it to say a compressor directly driven by the engine, but the "Merlin" never had a turbo.

Both the P-47 (Pratt & Whitney R-2800) and P-38 (Allison V-1710) had a turbocharger, or turbosupercharger (well, two actually for the two-engined P-38), that is to say a turbine driven by the exhaust gases; interestingly, some variants of their engines therefore have a "mechanical blower", driven by the engine, AND a turbosupercharger. The Turbo was for compensating the rarefaction of oxygen at high altitudes.

The first series Merlin (II, III, etc...) have a single stage, single speed supercharger.
The second series (XX, etc...) have a single stage, two-speed.
    The third serie (61, 66, etc...) have a two-stage, two-speed.
Size of the compressor impeller and speeds vary with the altitude for which the engine was designed: in the third group, the "66" was designed for low altitude, whereas the 76, 77, although externally similar, were designed for high altitudes.

Nerofer is right here, but in the common parlance, indeed, the distinction made by vaccarella is typical. OK, everyone wins, back to the ************!

No problem Don; a discussion with Paul is always interesting, and never an argument.

But back to Ferraris...with an anecdote, perhaps? Foskers in the U.K, who are selling the "Turbo" for which I provided the link, alos have a late 328 GTS, châssis number 81696, presented as an ex-Nigel Mansell car...

    All,

    (being inverse-pedantic)

I have a 328 GTS, fuel injected US version. No Turbo, no Merlin engine...just normal.

    Boost is good for power:D.

    I don't have boost.

FYI, I knew the 208 turbo was a 308 only made in Europe to accommadate laws and stuff.

    I didn't know there was a 328 turbo.

AFAIK, turbos are operated by exhaust; superchargers by the crank, possibly something else (like an extra motor); both provide boost.

The P-38 Lighting sucked until it had boost.

    Rob,

Yes, there was a "Turbo" version of the 328, mainly for tax reasons in Italy: their tax system was highly punishing cars about 2.000 cm3, so to circum-navigate this, Ferrari built the "Turbo", in the numbers above ( = 308 berlinettas + 828 spiders) only for the italian market, at least at the beginning; it was a development of the 208 Turbo, the two-valve per cylinder engine, but with an Intercooler, contrary to the 208 Turbo.
The "Turbo" had 254 hp, against 270 for the standard euro 328 version.

Same body as the 328, except NACA air intakes in front of the rear wheels, "Pininfarina" badge pushed back between the rear wheel and the bumper, five slots in the crease of the rear bumper to help heat dissipation, and a higher plenum in the rear bonnet (engine hood).

These cars were restricted to the italian market at first, but now some of these are seen in other countries as well. F-Chatter "Napolis" in the states has one, ex Nino Vacarrella (a blink of the eye to Paul...)...

OK, I was fooled here. I though the "308 GTB and 828 GTS" quoted was for car designates, not for production numbers. It was funny until you acted serious.

    My bad.

    Continue the excellent talk herein.

    Oh, not a problem, Rob.
What I always found interesting is that the Turbos are not an aside, or a small number:
These "Turbos" add 1136 cars to the total of 7412 "normally aspired" 328s...to make a grand total of 8548 cars for the 328 body.

Not to diverge from the main subject, but which Merlin version(s) was in the P-51? Hearing a RR Merlin starting up and then at take-off RPMs is something everyone (or at least anyone with a F-car) should experience.

    Jim,

The Packard-built "Merlin" V-1650-3 was fitted to the P-51 B and C; it was a high altitude rated engine, equivalent/identical to the Rolls-Royce built Merlin 63.
    The Packard-built "Merlin3 V-1650-7 was fitted to the P-51 D; it was a medium/low altitude rated engine, equivalent/identical to the Rolls-Royce built Merlin 66.

One of two remaining airworthy Lancasters lives about 50 miles from me. It flies in shows across the UK every summer (have already heard it pass over me twice this year). The 4 Merlins on it are incredible. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9obgpWoten0]An Avro Lancaster starts up, taxis out, takes off and does a flypast - YouTube[/ame] Makes you feel very humble in your little 3 litre V8... I keep meaning to do the technical tour of the hangars. A great idea for a 308 enthusiast's visit, but needs booking up far in advance.

They are still at Coningsby, Paul?
As for the "Merlin", it is indeed one of the greatest engine of the century.
And with a capacity of 27 litres, that's nine times a 308 engine...

Actually yes, Claude; the other flyable one, that is.
There are in fact two "able to move" in the U.K; one is flying, which is PA 474, the one of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight; the other one is "only" in taxying condition, it is by memory NX 611.
In Canada, you have one flyable, and one which should be flyable in the future: FM 213 is the one in flying condition (it was temporarily suspended four years ago) and another one, FM 212, is in Winsor Airport (Ontario, I believe) under restoration to flying condition.

Euh...well, I am digressing a bit from Ferraris, am I?
