A good friend of mine use to work in the Parts Department for the Sultan of Brunei. As well as telling me that the Sultan and his brother, Jeffery, use to order 5 of each car they wanted, they had several mini-multi storey car parks with three floors each crammed full of one make of car. Do you think, or does anyone know if he has ordered 5 FXXs'?

    Easy awnser.

He does however have 5 FX's (the 96' F512M based 1-offs ehhh...errr.. 6-offs). One is at the Marconi Museum in CA. Marconi has the only one that did not make it to the sultan because it was at Williams being fitted with a Formula One gear box when he closed all the garages up and stoped the supercar imports.

He stopped buying cars because he felt they went against his Islamic faith Aparently and you should see the cars he sold at that point. 4 door 456's etc.

I wonder how much the sultan is worth? Buying 5 of every car you want, plus a huge garage/wherehouse or two, having factory mechanics perform maintenence on the cars while paying them a salary for reclocating there and working on the cars....

There's a thread somewhere on this forum... About the complete Sultan's collection.
You will notice: no modern supercars, like Enzo, Zonda, Veyron, CGT, MC12 etc...

That list was compiled a long time ago though, and while accurate at the time, it should be considered outdated now. Still it was great of chilidog to share it as it cleared up more than a few mysteries.

It's my understanding that the days of our of control expenditures on luxury items and automobiles are mostly over for the Brunei Royal Family.

Wow, what a list! I've sent that link to my friend, and I'll wonder how many he can remember. He did tell me that several Lambo Countachs' were crushed as they had been left to rot and a Mclaren F1 GTR was written off being driven along a stretch of coast road by one of his mechanics.

As for the Ferrari's, he did manage to take several pictures when the coast was clear. Some cars are unrecognisable. Wierd and wonderful one-off's.

Can you get him to clarify this statement? Only one F1 GTR went to Brunei - the other 8 McLarens they bought consisted of 3 F1 LMs, 1 F1 GT longtail and finally 4 F1 road cars. If you can get positive confirmation that it was indeed the GTR that was written off, that would be BIG news.

    Thanks!

    T. Bscher or H. Poulain have heavily damaged their cars during races and they have all been rebuilt by the factory. The funniest story was R. Atkinson (Mr Bean) and his F1 crashed at a redlight (against a grand'ma Morris Minor If I remember well, not sure about the car thought). More than $150 000.00 bills to rebuilt the front of the car...

The only 'new' cars they bought that I'm aware of, and was covered by a few magazine's, were 12 Rolls Royce Phantoms with a modified dash with diamonds. This was a couple of years ago, when the Phantom was new.

Big spending on supercars is over.

To your question, my friend has confirmed that the Mclaren written off was an orange LM GTR. It almost came together with another car on the coast road used frequently by the technicians to run most of the cars. He has also clarified that at the time he spent working there, there were 2500 cars (all sorts) just at his compound. In total there is seven compounds apparently - (sorry that this isn't Ferrari chat by the way)

Okay - there was only one orange one in the Brunei collection, so that would have to be LM5. The other two LMs that went to Brunei (LM1 & LM4) were both black. The GTR (#09R) was also black.

Huge thanks for the info. :)

I'm 99% sure it was not an LM. You need to check your source. If an LM was totalled that means that 2 McLarens had shunts in Brunei

All that I can say is that he was in Brunei for two years working in the one of the parts departments.

He spoke to the technician before he left in the LM. Then he had to call the driver of the tow- truck after he received a message from the technician to say that he had crashed it. It came back completely wrecked. The techie' wasn't hurt but remembered that he clocked around 140 mph before the impact. A car had pulled out infront of the Mclaren, he swerved to avoid it then hit a sandy bank. It was repaired, I'm told. My friend recalls six Mac F1's in total but there may be more.

There was also four Lambo QV5000s' and two Renault 5 Turbo-2's that were crushed after they had been left to rot outside the compound.

More to the point, the Sultan had five 456 GT Estates which were apprently the most used cars. They were placed around the palace and only ever driven a few hundred yards a day. I heard that one of these 456s' was put up for sale recently? As for the Enzo, a clay mock-up was sent to the Sultan three years before it broke cover as he wanted something along those lines as one of his specials, so to speak.

I'll try to get him to scan some pictures and email them to me.

I was pretty sure that the sultan did purchase one of the first Enzo's produced. White I thought. There were at least rumors of it because everyone thought it was strange that he was buying cars again although I think the enzo was the only one. Also I believe Jeffry was really the driving force behind buying a alot of the cars and he and the sultan had a falling out.
