I heard that Lamborghini made a handful of LP400S Series I Countachs with the periscopa roof which I find most desirable.

How many were made and how many of those cars were RHD and LHD respectively?
Are the chassis numbers of these few cars all known?

I am not talking about LP400 cars that were later modified to LP400S style.

I think "a handful" is a good way to put it, considering the 2 Wolf cars (0148 & 0202), the Spazzapan car, another 2 cars at least... but hey, in the late 70s who was counting?

I don't think any were RHD cars and the ones you saw in Australia were simply LP400 which were privateer converted to S cars.

But, lets make one thing clear: the factory did not purpose-build LP400S with the Periscopa roof. Even 1030 is simply a car which happened (for some economic or logistical reason) to be built upon a donor LP400. This is true of even the Wolf cars. Production LP400S generally had the flat roof, although there is always a charming proviso with Lamborghini of that era.

    Hope this helps

I have reached the conclusion that nothing of value was wasted at the factory and coupled with an evolutionary approach to development this might explain the "exceptions".

You are right about the Australian cars Joe, we have 8 LP400 - six were "upgraded" to S spec by one or other of the local distributors in the 80's - three of those are now back to original guise.
