I took my black 360 modena to our vacation home in Tahoe for the weekend and left it parked outside for 3 days as I don't have a garage there. I'm curious if any others do this? While I'm not afraid to drive it - sometimes daily - and park it at restaurants, movie theaters, work, the hardware store, etc. - it did feel a little strange leaving it in my driveway overnight and having all the pollen, dirt, pine needles, and occassional pinecone fall on it. Between that, the black color, and driving over the slough near Sacramento (tons o' bugs to squish on the front) - the car was a filthy mess of dirt, pine sap, squished bugs, and dirt - even all through the diffuser. Whatever finish is on the car, it all washed off easily with some warm water. Good-to-go for another run up there in a couple weeks.
I never park mine outside. I have parked the Jeep outside a few times, and am amazed at all the dust, dirt and droppings it picks up in one day. Then there are kids throwing footballs around in the street. Norman Rockwell scene, maybe, but Norman knew nothing about car care.
It only takes a couple of minutes to throw on a car cover. You can pick one up at Costco for $29.95. That would save you from the elements, as well as unwanted attention.
I drive my car every day, park it outside during the day, garage at night. IMO, the most important thing to do is to make sure that the car is perfectly clean before putting any sort of cover on it. The heavier, coarser canvas covers can scratch easily if laid on top of the debris that accumulates in just one day in most areas. For that reason, unless the car is clean (and I mean washed and chamoised dry the previous night and in my garage until I take it to work), I don't put a cover on it until I'm able to wash it. Also, get the bird droppings off quickly (within 24 hours), so that it doesn't etch the paint. Am I irresponsible? No, I'm enjoying the car. A little care goes a long way... -Peter (got my first paint chip today in six weeks of daily use, thankfully no metal dings. Darn SUV's!)
Leave it outside? Uh-huh. On the street. Parralel parked. Often in the snow. IN NYC! 400i #49773 - I am told it is the Buick of Ferraris. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have never parked mine inside since I bought it in 1997. I don't have a garage but I do have 7 cars in one driveway. Car cover city.
I completely agree...I park my 360 Spider outside on my office parking lot every day. People know my car and the spaces are wide so I don't get dinged. The key for me is that I detail my cars every 2-3 months with Rejex, which is a polimer (used on the space shuttle). Rejex gives a great shine, protects the paint, and even bird and elephant droppings wipe off easily. Every night I use Adams detail spray and a microfiber towel in my garage to wipe off the car, and I wash it weekly. Adam, who has a complete line of car car products (Adams Polishes.com) is a friend of mine and he explained that, more times than not, for the reasons stated above, a car cover will do more harm than good. So keep your car detailed and clean, and you will not have a problem.
I have a very nice car cover for it - from calcarcover.com - made from superweave fabric. It fits great and seems to work very well. But...the car was so dirty from bugs from the 200 mile drive that I thought it would be worse to use the cover than not. I tend to use the cover if the car is basically clean and it will be parked for a week+ in my garage (dusty) or under pine or oak trees - which drip a lot of sap in blobs. The pine trees at my place in tahoe only drip a fine mist of sap which seems to wash off just fine. One thing to think about though - when your car cover is covered in guey sap, it is really hard to get off without smearing some on the paint...and washing car covers - even in a commercial washer - is a hassle. As for the post showing the 400i parallel parked - I parallel park my 360 pretty frequently in Oakland and Berkeley. It's probably easier to fix bumper chips than door dings - so I sort of prefer parallel parking if the spaces are ok in size. My wife has even parallel parked it on occassion!
Those cars are Paris Hilton's, she lives down the street from me. She has a garage, but converted it into a closet. BTW, she also has her Bentley Continental GT parked outside as well.
Ahh - it's a car. I park outside all the time, and a few times overnighted in a Best Western parking lot uncovered (albiet a lowly 348). So far it's ok. Zaino wax seems to be working great. Typically Parallel park on the street rather than parkades but do them too. Marriott in San Jose had a special "handicapped" spot lit up with christmas lights for me last month - must of known of the limits of a 348 owner I definitely concur with the Sacramento bugs - just plastered the front spoiler.
I park my outside all the time... but for longterm storage I keep it in the garage... it just keeps it looking cleaner longer... my other one used to leak so when it threatens to rain I was always running to get it inside... in the south.. a little rain follwed by lots of sun = mold & mildew.... not fun!
I park outside frequently as well. I generally keep my cars in the garage when I'm home at night, but if I'm on a trip or something I don't think twice about leaving one outside. I also parallel park downtown (twice today, in my 456). It's a car, after all! I also leave my cars for days at a time in my carport-- covered, but open on one side.
Have to park overnight on the street reasonably often when visiting folks but oddly enough the only 'street ding' I've picked up was when the car was at a display event.
Sure do. Also track the car in the rain, have driven the car while it was snowing, etc. It is only a car guys, and they build them to handle various conditions. Of course if you have a very, VERY rare historic car that may be different, but modern (1983+) production cars can easily handle the weather. IT IS JUST A CAR! Look forward to seeing Fchatter at Lime Rock for the Historic race this weekend. Pic of me below at Lime Rock driving in the rain. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Glad to see the folks in this thread actually seem to drive their cars. I drive mine as much as possible - only thing I don't do is park it at the local BART station. It feels like there are 3 classes of cars: - garage queens (backed out, washed, put back in garage) - car taken out for a spirited drive, but put right back in garage when done - the car is a car - use it like you would pretty much any other car I just don't see many others parked on the street - obviously there aren't a ton to see period, but it is good to know there are others parking theirs in the elements. I've driven in dry and rain. Not much snow to worry about in the Bay Area - and I wouldn't take it into the Sierras in the winter - the solid bottom and low ride-height and mountains would make the car an interesting toboggan.
In the hot months of the summer, parking any car unprotected outside during the day in the sun and the high humidity is a recipe for disaster, the results of that can be seen within a year, if not sooner. I park mine in an a/c garage in the summer and a heated garage in the winter. During the day, when I drive it to work, I have a shelter to park i under. Yes Ferraris are cars, but they are not appealing to the driver /owner if the leather is cracked and the dash is a mess. Not to mention the questionable quality paint on most of the cars.
I guess Im in the second class, mostly because I dont really need to drive my 308 for ordinary transportation. My major concerns with outside parking are door dings and sunlight beating on the interior. Dirt and stuff wash off.
