I was wondering how many people here have had complete strangers just walk upto them and ask them whether they want to sell their car? I've had it happen to me several times, I've had people stop outside my house and ring my doorbell to ask, I've had business cards left on my windscreen by Investment Bankers, Diamond dealers, you name it..pretty crazy stuff but then again she's my pride and joy so I take care of her, so shes always lookin fine S
never once.....kids have stopped me while driving and asked me to pull over to see it and adults have asked to take pics w/ them sitting in it but no offer....(probably not interested enough)
None, but I was standing next to my car and a rather shady looking guy tried to sell me car stereo speakers. They were bigger than my car! Ken
He wasn't driving an Astro van was he??? Perhaps he even showed you a magazine with an ad for the speakers that showed list price was really high, and he had gotten too many loaded at the warehouse, if he goes back with the extras the boss will think he is stealing them.... A classic scam! BT
I have had several ask if I would sell my 328 GTB, I guess because it is a hard model to find. Since my answer has always been I intend to keep it until I'm dead, the discussions never went further. At least a few did go on to buy cars, so I know they were for real. A local guy wanted to buy my '94 348 TB challenge when I had it (another very rare model). I did eventually sell it to him 4 years ago, and he still has it, saw him and the car this past weekend. No one cared about the other 4 Fcars I had to approach me. Dave
The question I usually get is,' You don't what to sell it, do you?' And since my answer is always, 'no', that ends the conversation.
Once. It was 11 pm, I was alone at a petrol station on the german/swiss boarder, filling the 328 after driving back from the Nurburgring. It was an automated pump, nobody else was there apart from me. Then, a very fat Mercedes pulled up next to me, an S55 or something and 4 well to do looking arab gentlemen get out and one starts filling up. After a few minutes two of them head over to me. "Nice Ferrari" They say "Thank you" I reply. "Will you sell it?" "I don't know, perhaps" (I had been thinking of selling it for a month or two) "How much would you sell it for?" So I take the price I was thinking of and add 20%. His reply..... "Is that all?" I could hear the dissappointment in his voice even though I'd just offered him the most expensive 328 in continental europe. "Do you have a Swiss Bank account? Perhaps we can do a deal" he says "What deal?" "We give you 100,000 euros cash now, you drive across to Switzerland and pay it into your account. When it clears you take 12% and transfer the rest to another account outside Switzerland" Alarm bells started ringing. These are probabaly not the sort of gentlemen I want to be seen having a converstaion with late on a sunday evening at the germand/swiss boarder all the time being filmed on serveillance camera. He gave me a number, "Thank you for the kind offer I will think about it and get back to you." Somehow I don't think their interest in my car was so genuine ...any expensive looking car with swiss numbers would have done for them. I mentioned it to the police a few days later. You never know.
I've had a couple of people approach me and ask that when I was interested in selling the car, to give them a call. (voice inside Bernie's head) "Yeah right!!!! Show me the money!!!!"
Isnt this the funniest thing, I have had this happen to me on many occasions, ... Does anyone actually fall for this ?? ( I guess so since they are still doing it) And even now they have matching logo shirts, etc.. more professional.
Yeah, I bought some when I was in college in Miami in 1989. My brother in Tulsa also had the crew approach him, as well as my brother in Columbia, SC. Recently they tried it at my work here in Palm Beach county, FL. We looked up the model number of the speakers and found a bunch of web pages with people listing the same guys in a scam in their area around the country. It is a franchise operation I believe, though totally fraudulent. The speakers I bought were decent BTW and I paid them $150 for the pair. BT
Yep, that's like me, Birdman.....the rest of my family is the ones offering to sell! Mom, took the guys name of the flaming 308 story.......said I just call him....LOL! Mostly it's kids, they just ask for it free when I'm thru with it! The karts, also....
and most commonly asked question is...."how much does it cost?". my answer is always "a lot more than i should spend or can afford on my income"...and that's about as truthful as it gets....
and your ferrari would not be ringing blllllbells to the ch police ... well to do arab gentlemen not very smart >I mentioned it to the police a few days later. very ch
I find its best not to think about it too much!! Unless you are driving a very rare model, I would be most skeptical of anyone offering, seriously, to buy a$100k+ car in some parking lot or gas station.
I've only had my 348 for 3-4 months, but a group of "foreign" kids in a blinged out CTS seemed seriously wanting to buy my 384. Given the time to find it, and the quesitonable neighbourhood I was in, I passed. I'm sure there'll be a few more - goes with the territory.
Never had any offers. But, on countless occassions people would start talking to me about the car and say "Yea, i was considering getting one but decided not too!!"
