I bought an earlier model because (select all that apply):

  1. Needed the cash, so bought a less expensive car

  2. Found newer car performance was more than I needed

  3. Features in older car not available in newer one

  4. Aesthetics: missed the old car look and feel

There are a lot of posts on FChat about people selling their Ferrari and moving to a newer model (e.g., sold a 308, bought the 348). How many members here have bought an older Ferrari after owning a more recent one, and why?

I need something to tell the my family over the holidays -- they think I'm an idiot for buying a Ferrari a decade older than my Porsche... ;)

    As time has passed I have gone progressively older. It started with a 1977 308 because it was Magnum's car, then I bought a '74 Dino, a '71 Daytona Spyder, then a '67 365 GT 2+2 and finally a '57 410SA. I'm looking forward to a 166MM someday.

You should add a fifth choice:
    "Because I could afford it"
Sometimes the newer model (as in the 308 post above) is cheaper...

    another possible choice-
Because it's easy to work on and parts are available. (for those of us that like to tinker on them as a hobby)

The only thing stoping me from selling my 355 spider and buying a 1972 Dino in which i have loved since the Persuaders when danny Wild drove one. Is that my two sons 12 and 13 dont yet understand what a great icon the Dino is and they object. But some time over the next few years no matter what ferrari i have i WILL buy an older dino.

Good catch. I overlooked it because I'm mechanically inept.

Maybe lump it in with #3 (features). I guess the poll is more to promote discussion.

Probably option #1. I assumed if someone could afford an F430 they could also afford an F355, 328, etc.

After initially owning a 328GTS I tried a TR, Mondial-t, and 348tb. All nice enough in their own ways, but I just kept missing the "total experience" of the 328. It just looked right, sounded right, drove right. So here I am again, and probably permanently.

1978 308 GTS, then 1992 Mondial T Cab, then 2002 360 F1, then 1978 308 GTS again, and now 1986 328 GTS. I am trying to find a pattern. MM or Enzo next?

Had a 328 GTB, then an F355B. Found there was little I could do myself on the F355.

Had always lusted for a Lusso, but they got too expensive. Finally bought a Daytona. Love the car, and lots to do, for sure.

To this point I have done the entire suspension and removed and disassembled the motor! Did not want to do the motor, but over-taken by a broken valve.

So I can say I got my wish for a car I can work on! BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!

In 1998 I sold my 87 328 GTS and bought an "as new" (had 1500 miles) 94 348 TB. I immediately missed the 328 and knew I would own one again. It took a while, but I found the perfect 89 GTB which arrived 5 years ago this week. I have since added a new 430 but still enjoy the 328 immensely for a variety of reasons (though performance is not one!). I am lucky enough to be able to afford and store both, if I could not, I guess the 430 would have to go.

Bought a 1987 328 GTS after much looking. When the family found out, they were in shock. "You bought a 19 year old car? What the &*@ for?"

Well, when they heard it was a Ferrari, then the attitudes changed and the shock turned to realization of what I bought and envy set in. Now my brother-in-laws are drooling and asking many questions.

    The wife issue.

When she found out, she did not fully understand until we went to pick it up. The look on her face was worth it. I think her jaw hit the ground. Now she want to go for rides more often than I do. Thankfully she cannot drive a stick, so my baby is safe.
