Nothing is ever simple - I've fitted a new compressor to my 456 as it was leaking but having regassed with 1300g R134a as specified in the workshop manual the clutch cuts in/out every couple of seconds and the my gauge spikes to above 15 bar (which is why the clutch disengages - at (over) pressure set at 15 bar). My car has a Delphi/Harrison V5 compressor, the manual says a Sanden, maybe the Delphi needs less gas - how much?

If a pull a few hundred grammes out it seems OK.

I had a similar problem and I had a short on the back side of the clutch. An exposed wire was the problem, but mine is a Sanden compressor. A used replacement clutch was easy to find. My recollection from recharging mine was the PSI does jump up when the clutch is off, so it may not be the spike causing the clutch to shut off, but rather the other way around.
