College has nothing to do with it. Spelling and grammar are learned way before college, or not. The most marvelous thinking is often done by folks who never went to school at all. If you are bright, you were born that way and, good for you! What I meant is that if you are using a computer, do what I do. Before posting, hit spell check. I type fast and often make mistakes I don't even notice. I want you to be able to read what I write, especially if you disagree. I'm here to share thoughts and learn. If you were not a thoughtful person, you wouldn't be here. Cheers to you, sir!

OK, if someone has drunk a huge amount of alcohol & you can’t wake them up they could die. If they are semi conscious & vomiting they could die. Your duty is to call 911. No exceptions.

    Very unfortunate.

I think many of us did really stupid things in college and were simply lucky enough to survive.

    RIP, a young life.

My take is a little different:

THIS **** JUST TURNS MY STOMACH!!!!

ARE ALL OF YOU YOUNG KIDS FNCKING IDIOTS????

DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE A CLASSMATE EVERY DAMNED YEAR?

Sorry, there was a fatality at UT Asutin and as he lay dying unconscious they wrote racial slurs on his body in Sharpie........

Wake up, smell the coffee......the idea of bulldozing all the frat houses nationwide sounds like a great fiorst step to me followed by a mandated alcohol awareness class where they watch movies of bosies being zipped into bags followed by community service in a local ER for a full weekend to watch the innocent bloody carnage........

Ther ya go.....sorry I have known a lot of people who died.....they get real stiff and they are no longer any fun, no matter HOWQ hard you kick 'em.....

Have a good weekend Chris, I'm sorry to go off on you I know you are a good guy...when I was of that age only smart people got into college.....and it was to have a future, not end one....

Do you think times are really that different? I believe that the main difference is the much more efficient spread of information now. Twenty years ago, none of us would have known about this kid in NJ unless we lived in the immediate area or knew someone else who did. We perceive an increase in incidents like this when in reality all we have is an increase in people hearing about the incidents.

None of this really matters as much as the tragic loss of life in a completely senseless way. Just my .02 on the issue.

Thanks dude, no offense taken. I've not been to a frat and don't plan to go and i rarely drink and if i do its only a few beers. It just doesn't appeal to me and i honestly can't see why people would want to do some of the things they do at the frats. I can have A LOT more fun sober. I just look at some of my friends who get drunk and wonder if thats the only way they can have fun, its sad.

What frat was it? May he rest in peace:(

I drank myself to the point of passing out many times in college, it was stupid but when you are 18 and have 23-25 year olds you look up to cheering you on its hard to stop. Fraternity life is great because you make lifelong friends and can have infinite women if you choose. When you need a job or career your frat brothers will always be there to help out all they can. Its a bond that can't be explained, only experienced.

I agree and I somewhat disagree. I blacked out almost every night I was in a frat. Let it be the college (asu), or the people I dont know. And about lifelong friends, I wrapped up college about a year ago which means I left the frat and I have really yet to still talk to any of them no matter how close. Lifelong friends are who I grew up with, not who I paid dues with. And I don't know about job or careers, if you are a business owner are you really going to hire guys in your Frat or frat guys in general?? They all got wasted like you did. And I could never try and explain the ritual, yet it's some thing that you go through and somehow understand. Truly Frat's are no secret, in my frat the ritual is a secret of over a 100 years. Yet they trust 18-20 year olds with it???? It's a very very odd situation in our society.

You think? I always viewed the whole idea as a way for individuals who are put into unfamiliar social surroundings as means to find like individuals who can join together to become aquianted and help each other traverse the many challenges of the college experience.

And I never agreed with people who think it is "buying" friends. Again, everyone has something in common and everyone goes through the same experiences when joining.

But you know all of that and also that there are some iffy situations that occur in frats :)

Haha well the end made me laugh. To me it was trying to find what frat would hang out with the hottest chicks. While I was in it, I started to be convinced it was about other reasons. But ultimately nothing of what I was convinced of stuck with me, it's all about partying and girls. Hell, my father who did it back in the 60's will tell you the same.

And John, this isn't against you at all and I've posted it before but this is an excerpt from a guy who gave his opinion of frats on this random website and I completely agree..

Doesn't bother me at all! Neither does this:
All but two U.S. presidents since 1825 have been fraternity men, and 63 percent of the U.S. presidents' cabinet members since 1900 have been fraternity men .
Studies show that 76 percent of Congress, 71 percent of the men listed in "Who's Who in America," and 85 percent of the Fortune 500 executives belong to a fraternity.
Since 1910, 85 percent of the Supreme Court justices have been Greek.

I did it too so I'm not bagging necessarily, just now that I'm not involved I see the big picture. During Rush week they gave that speech about all the goverment people, to me it meant nothing. I never want to get into politics and I'm sure thats not why this kid pledged either. While talking to my father indepth about it, I do feel the least bit it's changed from back then to now.

What college did they go to? Harvard? I doubt the fact that they were in a frat led to their success. Also, think about the background they usually come from.

Being in the frat didn't necessarly lead to their success, it is more the personality types that did. And the fact that there is such a high correlation hardly makes me think of them as losers.

Greeks have a 10% higher rate of graduation than do non-Greeks.

70% of those listed in "Who's Who in America " are Greek.

85% of the upper-level executives in the "Fortune 500 Companies" are Greek.

43 CEOs of the top 50 U.S. companies are Greek.

As Alumni, Greeks give approximately 75% of all money donated to universities.

All are clear advantages! Basically they get things done.

When I was 23 I polished off about 3/4 of a bottle of Yukon Jack PermaFrost. That little "feat" is in my top 5 all time stupidest moves. I harfed for about 4 hours, at the end of that I was expelling stomach lining. I was sick for 2 days afterward. I have never and will never do it again, but I see guys get that drunk on a weekly basis. Why? Where is the fun? To this day I can't even smell PermaFrost without feeling sick, and I haven't drank it since that day. I don't understand how someone can get that wasted. I'm personally at a loss for words reading about this and trying to rationalize it. :(

RIP indeed, but one thing I noticed in that photo montage was a common underlying element: drinking and partying. When will these kids realize that is not what college is about? Sad.
