If you have to ask you probably can't afford it, figure minimum (independent service) about $6,000 for a 30k with Belt Service.

As a prior M5 (and M6) owner, plus 98 355 spider F1 and now 2004 360 Modena Coupe, you will be SHOCKED out of your pants every time you get your ferrari serviced -- relative to the costs of maintaining a BMW. You will also think 5 times about driving your ferrari from Seattle to NYC due to likelihood and problems encountered if you experience a breakdown, whereas you wouldn't even think twice about driving your M3 from Seattle to NYC. Get a ferrar if you've got to have one, thrive on buffing it, and the performance on the occasional wide-open road, otherwise forget it.

shawsan great post ... I love long road-trips 2500-5000 miles and take them every few months and as much as I want a 430 your post reminds me why I always buy Porsches . ( maintenance and worry free especially on long trips )
I think the Ferrari does need much more attention than a new 997.

damn, I really want a drivable exotic.....

    My choices are

    Astin Martin Vantage (8 cyl)
    Porsche 997
    360
    BMW M6

I was really hoping that the 360 was drivable enough not to fear everytime you take her out.

a "standard" 30k service should run around $3500 to $4000 from f-authorized services. i'm uncertain of your location but i had my 360 done @ cauley ferrari in detroit about a year ago and was satisfied w/ their work.

the final bill on mine was around $7k plus but it included new clutch, new brake pads and a few other optional misc. items (figure on spending an additional 10% to 15% on unexpected findings once mechanics get access to inside the engine). good luck to your decision.

I drive a M3 now (under warranty) and the cost to own is nothing.

The only $$$ I put into her are mods.

I wonder if I'm meticulous enough to own a 360.

Ive seen some beautiful 997's out there $25K cheaper (and under warranty).

    Damn....

What city do you live in? If your in California, PM me and I will give you the information of a good mechanic to call. If you want an everyday car go for the 997 as you will have the warranty on it, if you get a 360 I would not recommend it for everyday use.

The major service is under $4k since the engine does not need to come out whereas older F-cars (Testarossas, etc.) required the engine to be dropped. Access to the belts is via a "trap door" behind the seats.

so relatively speaking, If the M3 costs $1000 to drive a year, what do you think the 360 and 997 would cost for that same year?

Now that I think about this question it doesnt really make any sense since the 997 and M3 would both have warranties.

As much as I hate to say it, I think I need to spend my 100K on a 997 S cab, under warranty, Lapis blue with the natural brown leather intereior with full carbon and hope I dont see any of you at a stoplight. I'd have 3 years of maintenance free driving as opposed to say $15K out the door in a 99 360.

Now depreciation is indeed a factor when computating "cost to own".

a new 997 S cab would lose 15-20K in three years, whereas a 99 360 may hold its value a bit better than the depreciation of a new Porsche.

But you also have the trade off, if you buy a 997, M3, Viper, etc. You'll ALWAYS wish you had the f-car. IMO keep your M3 as a beater (thats laughable, lol) and get the 360 to drive on the weekends and so forth.

Depreciation of just $15-20K off a $100K sticker For a Porsche over a 3 year period seems a bit on the optimistic side. I'm more familiar with Turbo pricing, but a 2002 Turbo coupe (so 3 years old) in excellent condition with 15-20K miles would probably sell for $85-90K at a dealer. That car sold new for $120-125K. You would get dealer wholesale, at about $10K less, or private party might go for $5K less if you're lucky, so figure $80-85K to you, for about a $40K decline. If you started at $100K instead, maybe you lose $30K over 3 years.

I own this M3 free and clear so it will pay for 40% of the trade up.

    plus insurance....Im in Cali.

I mean a 100K car is a stretch as it is and only possible for me because I dont owe anything on the Beamer.

    I only make 10K a month and have a 5K mortgage alone.

If the 360 is going to be a $ pit, I am smart enough to know I'm not able. I've owned P, B and M-Cars all my life and know that German cars can be relied upon to provide years of service without fear. I also owned a J-car so I know the pain of seeing a beauty in your garage that you better admire from afar.

If a $100k is a stretch ... don't buy it. It'll be Murphy's Law. When you don't have the budget for repairs that's when you'll need it the most. 360s are extremely reliable but I wouldn't chance spending your last penny to acquire it and then not having any funds to maintain or repair it in the event of a catastrophe. It's unnecessary over extension on your part and probably not a smart move.
