I was wondering how much the actual parts were for the 30k service. Seeing if it makes sense to do it yourself.

It makes total sence to do it yourself.

    1. water pump
    2. thermostat
    3. spark plugs

aren't these just as important in a 30K job?

It normally comes out to $1,500 in parts.

I think it depends on one's abilities...it would be total insanity for me to attempt to drop the engine/transaxle and attempt a major service. Of course guys like Ernie change out piston rings before they have dinner in the evening... ;)

Dave I think your selling yourself short here. If I can do an engine out service you can.
CPU77, it makes perfect sense to do it yourself and you will learn a huge amount about your car and save a few $. I think Ernie has done it without a hoist(is that correct?) but it is far easier to have the use of one. The last one I did it took about 35 hrs. Regards, Vern

$1500 is not bad at all. Hmm makes ownership much easier. I already have a lift. So that should help make thing go easier. Thanks guys!

Most NGK Platinum or Iridium plugs last longer than 30K, so it's not always a necessity to change them. Moreover, they can be changed at any time with the engine in-place.... so, it's simply a matter of preference.

WP and Thermostat are also matters of choice. The only way to get the pump is indeed with the engine out of the car. Some folks say "if it ain't broke, don't mess with it". Others would replace it (the whole thing) rather than risk a failed rebuild (and painful second engine pull). Others competently perform the rebuild (seals, gaskets, etc) then pop the bugger back on. It's a preference thing.

Just a minor correction Daniel you can take the water pump out of a 355 w/o removing the engine it's the 348 you can't remove without the engine out. Regards, Vern
