I don't want to know what I have spent on my TR this past year. I'm afraid to pull the receipts and add them up. I can tell this.... What ever I'm spending on it hasn't exceeded the fun I've had in it. It's been worth every penny I've spent. The Tubi that I put on it was the best investment to date. I love the sound. Here is a partial list of maintenance items in the past 12 months:
engine out service, timing belts, water pump, all new belts & hoses
A/C work, altenator rebuilt, new steering rack, new brake pads
    new Tubi, new belts
new chrome emblems front and rear, new titanium pedals
oil changes, tune ups, adjust idle, new battery, etc, etc.

I have a boat and we all know that B.O.A.T stands for Bring On Another Thousand. Well...Ferrari's should be called B.O.A.3.T. because every time I put it in the shop the bill averages about $3,000. Sometimes more and sometimes less. I've never got out for less than $1,000 and the most has been about $8,000. I don't scrimp or cut corners and I let my mechanic do all the work so that I have records and know that it was done correctly and nothing was missed.

I have all the records from the previous owners and it looks like more has been spent on maintenace over the years than the intial purchase price. But the car is 17 years old so what can you expect.

Someone gave some good advice earlier in this thread. You need to be able to buy the car and have plenty in reserve to keep it running. I would add to that by suggesting that you need to have an extra $10,000 or so in your budget after the purchase.

If all this doesen't scare you out of buying the car then move ahead and never look back and don't add up your receipts. Enjoy the car! They are awsome machines that stir the soul.

    Life is good

Is good to see people like you and me, I drive them daily no matter what, sold the 328 with 67,000 miles and the Tr with almost 48,000 miles. I do not work so it is a lot of driving for fun and at 33 I still have a lot of miles to put on. Great job Napoli

Thanks for the replies. It seems that somewhere between $1 and $2 per mile is a good ballpark number.

    Testacojones:

Thanks for the compliments. I'm quite sure that if I was in front of you, you wouldn't be calling me imbecil. Unfortunately you live in Florida and I live in Texas, so it's unlikely that I would be able to test my thesis. I ask a very specific question and half of the replies are something like "if you are worried about maintenance cost, then Ferrari is not for you". Well, you know what, if you don't want to think about how much money your car costs you, then don't click on the thread and problem solved. And regarding the "I hope your car blows up...", well, I hope someday you grow up. I don't need you or anybody else to try to teach me anything, capice?

I find it very alarming to these reports of the TR. I have an 86TR I am the 3rd owner. Bought in 99 with 40k, did the belts and clutch(knew I had too) and have driven her trouble free since. Just hit 51k last week. Aside from annual service of oil, antifreeze and wax Im shocked to hear of these other issues of maintance.I try and drive her weekly and store in the winter for 5 months. No leaks, no issues, I will follow the 5/6 yr rule and do the belts probably next year again. All in all, about 2k a yr in service including belts and all. In CDN funds.

The only big thing I'd worry about is the trans. shaft. These are weak in early TR's. Mine blew when I was running with a bunch of Hell's Angels. Threw trans fluid all over them but as we go back a long ways they got over it. The one in Wills went as well. (Mine went at 85K miles) You might want to consider replacing the shaft and seal with one from a 512 TR Box before it goes as when it does it can tear up the case. As I shut right down mine didn't.
You don't have to store in the winter. TR's are great in the snow.

Jim, after a terrible night and a long day ahead, that comment about your mechanic mad me laugh out loud......

Remind me to take the title from the glove box, when I drop of my car! ;)

Sometimes it's best to take the advice of the guys on the wrench......I can only imagine putting a new subframe under one of those beauties.

It's gonna cost you big bucks, Mr. Thread Starter, but I've never seen an Armored Car at a funeral before............You might want to log in under a more generic ID if your gonna talk smack........

There is no specific answer to your question, because these cars don't have a dollar/mileage/fun meter! As Napolis has mentioned, it takes a few speedos just to tell how fast and far you've travelled....Previous Owner maintenance/neglect will be the determining variable....

    Good Luck!

Racehorse Haynes ran his hard enough to melt all the tail lights...He had something going up in Austin......

I drove my 86 TR for over 50k miles in 4 years, and other than one major service, tires, brakes and a new clutch slave cylinder, I had no other problems whatsoever. So, my experience with a TR seems to be much better than most folks.

Thanks for the advise Napolis,my mech told me about the weak tranny potential and said its not a matter of if, but a matter of when. I will talk to him about replacing the shaft and seal to the 512 version. Thanks for the tip !!

hey franco, please, simma donna. this is a happy place. anyway, i've put around 4k miles on my 90 tr and have spent around $800 in the year and a half of ownership. the key is to buy a tr with a long, clean history. some people just don't maintain like others. find a caring owner so you spend less fixing and more driving. i don't believe every tr is going to cost alot in maintanance, just the beaters. and there are some beaters out there. good luck! can't we all just get along?

    How much??????

    1) Bought the car February 2002 and paid top market value.
    2) 30K service April 2004 ie: timing belt, all hoses water pump etc...
    3) K&N air filter
    4) Optima battery
    5) Hill Engineering pedals
    6) Hill Engineering shift nob
    7) Aluminium fuel filler cap
    8) Competition Components Stainless Fire Extinguisher
    9) OG Racing Entinguisher floor mount
    10) Red Ferrari brake calipers
    11) HRE wheels
    12) Pirelli P-Zero Rosso tires

too much? probably... but like others have said just don't look at the receipts and enjoy the experience...it surely outweighs the cost.

As an advise get the K&N out of the car your motor will live a better life, Porsche found out that a lot of dirt or crap whatever is passing into the motor and will deteriorate it.
