let me know your mechanic and next time I will ship the car there... ;)

#106769: Differential £4,537.70 Each means 5000 euro + VAT = 6000+ euro (from Eurospares site)

The SS Tubi Muffler is 2400 euro.

And I forgot to write all 8 pistons and an ignition coil in the work list

I forgot: fuel injectors (new), Airbox red painting, all the filters, engine cleaning, some bearings here and there in the engine, all four new wheel bearings, rear lights polishing, mirrors wirings, new passing lights (new OEM Cibie), new radiator fan switch. new fuel tanks venting tubes, new fuel tanks filling hose and several other details like that. No single piece of the car mechanic has been passed over: every single one has been tested, fixed, painted, plated or changed with a new one. I was scared when I went there yesterday, fearing a 100 k bill... I'm not rich, just a big enthusiast and no more.

I really wanted a like new car, as this fu@ky 208 GTB turbo was introduced when I was 20, in 1982, and was my youth dream: this time I closed my eyes without considering the car reselling value and went for the top restore possible. Who cares of the cost, I told myself: but yesterday I wasn't relaxed at all when the mechanic read me the never ending list of the works done...

Once I purchased a bad Countach that I fixed everywhere, but this one has been restored with even much more care, pieces and details. I'm very proud of it: I hope it will work, after so much money and time... ;)

If the rest matches the engine work, I am very impressed by his standards.

    Cost? upwards of 100 Euro

Yes, it matches. It's a world wide famous Italian shop. All what they did is in that standard, of course: same quality they use for the 250 LM and others much more expensive Ferrari. It's a Ferrari only shop.

I have to say that they told me it's the first time ever they do such a restore on a "poor" 208 turbo.

I will admit to being one of the dolts who voted for less than 20K. I didn't read the entire list and you have added some really spendy bits after the original post too. I also didn't see the bit about 22% Tax

So my new guess would be 50K-60k with the tax. I'd guess the base bill came in somewhere north of 40K

Knowing what I spent on my car with no major engine or paint work I'm going to guess $87k euros. If you had to do paint and bodywork I would say closer to $150k euro.

They did just the mechanic, no interiors and no exterior body work: The car was already fully restored in the body by the previous owner. My mechanic just painted the suspensions, wheel arches, engine bay, fuel tanks, front bay, airbox.

I did all the leather cream interiors and the steering wheel but there I paid another specialist: The cost is just for the full mechanic restore.
I'm sure that such a mech restore done in the USA would cost over 80 k USD (and without taxes)

    Ciao

My new guess is €65k consider the new added list and the 22% vat that I missed previously :D

    22%! Gosh...

You certainly won't be after you have paid your mechanic :D

All in, I would agree with the EUR 80k figure
If you gave the garage a clear brief at the beginning of the project you may have done yourself a favour as the economies of scale would have helped. i.e. one large batch of part s to be plated, one batch of suspension parts to be painted etc.

    fuel tanks venting tubes: new

and then engine cleaning, some bearings here and there in the engine, rear lights polishing, mirrors wirings, new passing lights (new OEM Cibie) and many but many other small things.

All that to say that a "don't skip anything" restore is very expensive. Consider that it was a car with 129500 km (more or less 81000 miles). Everything was destroyed after 81000 miles and 33 years, even the front springs... Yes this is the first turbo (with an already rebuilt turbocharger, fortunately), so the engine had more problem than a carbed 308, but a carbed 308 with 129000 km doesn't require much less too...

So, be careful when you buy a very old car with many miles, as this is what you get: a car that needs help and fixing in almost every piece. A VERY expensive fixing, as a car is made by thousands of pieces: I learned that when I almost died while hearing all that endless list of pieces changed or fixed or painted and plated...

So, how much did it cost?

I have to say two things in advance:

    1) here around Modena there are big specialists that can fix those cars also when blindfolded and know how to find pieces at a lower cost (for example 3x8 belt tensioners are the same of Fiat Ducato ones and so on) and they (sometimes) know how to find NLA pieces at a fair price. Not all are cheap and really experts also here, but as average (I suppose that) they are much cheaper than an USA specialist, for example (this is just my idea, sorry 2NA).

    2) My mechanic told me in advance there would have been a very special price for this one, as it was the tenth car in two years that I sent there to have a major service or a restore. So the (very long) labor cost was very low for a Ferrari famous specialist and the prices of the spare parts are the lowest possible, just to gain something.

Well, at the end I think I saved 20 k euro due to the superspecial price my mechanic gave me for this huge work (that is the biggest they did on a 208 ever).

So the final price is exactly 20 k less than the expected 62 k euro cost (here in Italy, taxes included) and the 70 K USD (without any tax) I think you should pay in the USA.

This price doesn't include interiors, tools, a manual, new TRX tires and some small other things for the body, the body polishing and some body details.

Well, I paid the car 48 k euro: a very good price for a 208 GTB turbo with a perfect body paint, Modena black plate and special option leather interior with red wire, perfect rims paint. Despite this very fair price for the car's restore, the car final cost is 98 k euro (YES!!!): I think it's the most expensive 208 GTB turbo in the world.

Please don't try to repeat this disaster... ;)

    ciao
