A company has approached me about using some of my flickr pictures for commercial use on one of their catalogs and I don't have much of an idea on how much to charge them per picture. Any help would be appreciated.

You can charge as little as $10 for an image that is one use in a single catalog that you retain the rights..... and you could go as high as $1000 for a shot where you release the copyright to them assuming you didn't have travel or helicopter expenses to take the shot.

It's really all over the board. Do you want to retain the rights?

I wouldn't mind giving up the rights, especially since there is such a vast difference money-wise. However, they want to edit them (take out the background, sharpen reflections, a bit of color correction..etc) so I guess my question now is, do they HAVE to buy the copyright if they want to do such heavy editing to them?

No they don't have to buy full rights to do that. You can give rights for one time use and alterations. You can even request a photo credit. It really depends on what's being done.

It's less if you care about giving up full rights and more if they want full rights. If they want to make sure the shot isn't used in another form of media by another company then they want full rights.

Do you have any thoughts on what you want regarding price?

I'm not sure yet if they want the rights or not, they asked if the pictures were "avaliable" and if so for how much. But i was thinking around 15 dollars per picture if its a single use thing and i get to keep the rights, or around 800 if they want the rights.

Sounds fair.....In fact if it were me, I'd go $50 for single because that's a reasonable number and the pictures are not readily available for purchase. MAke sure you are clear you are licensing the picture for only one insertion in a specific catalog.

Good luck and let me know how it goes.
