Hi everyone, been reading on these forums for almost a year now, looking to buy a 355. Finally saw one locally... 99 Berlinetta, yellow exterior, black interior, ~20K miles, F1, etc. I was all excited to go check out the car until I saw the vents on the dash. Looks like the owner kept the car outside quite a bit. Anyhow, is this dash even repairable? If so, how much do you guys think it's going to cost? Thanks.

Kind of pricey but you should smell that new leather! Awesome!

Disclaimer: I warned jetfixer that he'd probably spend a lot of time sniffing his new dash. Last I heard, there are nose-prints all over the thing.

A lot of guys have had theirs recovered, no? Maybe you can get the seller to knock 3-4k off the price and then remove the dash yourself and have it recovered. I believe recovering prices were $600-$1000 or so. Looks like one of the vents is broken too.

Well it also needs a major, so looks like we'll be doing a lot of negotiating with the price. Currently set at $69,999. Thanks for the info guys.

Looks like the instrument cover needs to be recovered also, it is pulling quite a bit.

Do it yourself for $400 +/-, if you have done interior work before. 2-4k if you bring it to a shop. The instrument cover will need to be stitched, same with the lower dash (usually does not show as much shrinkage as the top), so this portion is NOT a do-it-yourself project.

Passenger side dash vent looks like it needs replacing too. Seriously, I would have the car professionally inspected if it was allowed to fall this far...left outside is not a good sign! Becareful. Leather shrinkage is not a huge problem in the NW, assuming that is where this car is located.

    4 years older +$10k more.

I'm sure there is room for negotiation, just saying even at the same price I'd take the 99 just because it will always be worth more and is essentially 4 years newer.

It's also missing the right side engine cover (relatively inexpensive to replace). Not a bad price for a '99 F1 GTB, but you're looking at a few k right off the bat. That dash will bother you every time you sit in the car. Also any records? Nice that it has tools, those are a good $500.

I don't know about that dash problem, my car came from sunny Fla (for at least part of it's life) with 37k miles and the dash is perfect. Maybe the key is treating it often, or using a sunshade (which I do daily now).

If that link is in fact for the car in question, I'd move on unless you can talk the seller down at bit. Just the overall condition from the pics tells me the dealer doesn't care about the car---I mean you telling me the dealer couldn't vacuum the floor before the pics....If he doesn't care about the car then he doesn't care about the buyer...

+1. That car has much more wear than 17k miles should have. Either lots of neglect or....?
Also, I can see that the right engine compartment side panel is missing, and that is sort of a big deal, since they are rather spendy to replace, and I doubt you will ever be able to replace the VIN bar code sticker that was on it. Though you should be able to replace the emission sticker and such. Also, the tire inflator kit is missing. Less important, the factory car cover, seat covers and steering wheel covers are missing. I would be curious if the tool kit and manual pouch are actually complete.

This car has "Run" written all over it.

As cars age the difference between the years become somewhat moot as service records and pedigree become more important then the year. A clean and serviced 95 has advantages over a 99 with the less restricted exhaust and cult preferred electronics and a six speed. Miles + Services = a mechanically superior car and as long as the aesthetics have been taken care of then enough said.

Yeah the car is at the Newport Motors link. Ironically, the exterior is almost perfect, but like someone said, every time I sit in the car and see the dash, it's going to bother me. Dealer said owner traded it in for a 911. Also said he would be willing to split the cost of a major. Last major was done in '03 and so it needs one. I'm actually scared to take it into Ferrari of Seattle because it doesn't look that cared for over the years.

Books were there; doesn't look like too much work was done on the car yet. I don't know; I'm leaning on passing just because there is high probability that I'll have problems down the road. Thanks for all the opinions guys.

Speaking of dashes......anyone know of a good 355 dash cover? I did a search and only came up with 348 covers.

Get a comprehensive PPI done. And definitely negotiate heavily that IP (instrument panel) shrinkage and any other problem you find. It's a tough time to sell these cars right now. I'm sure they'll want to deal.

http://www.italiancarparts.com/index.html They have a nice velour one, a little like the old "mouse-hair" in the 246 Dino.

Thanks! The leather in my Father's 355 was recently replaced and looks new. He would like to keep it that way :)

Wow, only $100, not bad. Now, what color to order.....

Those are $40 online from many sources, the trick is none of them list Ferraris. Somehow Italian Car Parts must have got one of them to do it as a special for them. If you really want one, you might want to do some searching on the Net or call and inquire from some of the manufacturers.

My solution is to soak my dash in Leatherique Rejuvenator Oil at least three or four times per year. No shrinkage or cracks yet. ;)
I remove the excess the next morning with a damp towel, rung out with hot water. I skip using their "Prestine Clean" which they recommend using, as it seems to remove too much dye. Damp towel seems less agressive to me...and works well at removing the excess oil.

+1! I've used Leatherique on all my cars. It is fantastic, the absolute best IMHO. It can be rather time-consuming to apply, but the results are worth it. We have almost identical methods. I used the Pristine Clean only the first time to remove any old leather cleaner/protectants. Subsequently, I have only used the Rejuvenator rubbed in by hand. I let it sit in the sun for 4-6 hours (or overnight in the garage) and then remove the excess with a 100% cotton diaper.

    Here's the site: http://www.leatherique.com/

I personally don't use a dash cover, either. Although I do have a Covercraft sunshield in case I have to park in the sun for any period of time.

I also agree, with your comment regarding ICP, their prices are often times very, very high. However, I have not seen another company which sells the velour (not carpet) dash cover for the F355. Another owner I know has the velour model and it reminds me of the "mouse hair" on the 246 Dino and it appears to be well-made.
