Did not see anything that looks out of wack there. The rear firewall is a flat aluminum panel with an access hole it it for servicing the motor that ties the rear rectangular frame section and gives it sheathing strength like plywood flooring does to joists. If one of the members of the frame bent or cracked it would deform the rear panel as you suggest. It seems like it would have to be a lot bigger hit than this car seems to have for that type of deformation IMO. d
Ok, if I have to... 1> Does the car HAVE to be a F-Car? I don't intend to sell the TR and don't want to be in two clubs at once...Loyalty is my middle name... 2> Does the car HAVE to be street legal? YEP! (Indiana street legal...meaning headlights, seat belts and bumpers) 3> What is the budget to the nearest $10k to get to the point "Done and ready on Day #1"? (those are nickles and dimes...to the nearest 50K, I would say $100-150K.) 4> How much of a "Project" are you looking for? (I want to run it next summer by F1 race time...like I said, I would prefer to just rebuild the four corners and maybe repaint, but new engine or drivetrain isn't out of the question...I have no desire for a '100 hours on the jig' project car, or anything that takes me to Dallas...LOL
A friend of mine had a Formula Ford that he took to club events on the weekends, and while it was fairly reasonable to buy, he had to have a full time mechanic (not kidding) to keep it running right, tuned, etc... I like Ferrari's and its my dream to drive in 24 hrs of LeMans (and be 21 again). Once you've driven 12 cyl, you can't go back to 6...its hard to even get excited about 8. I know what you are thinking...HISTORIC RACING...someday, not yet.
This info helps quite a bit. Below are just 2 examples of what you can do. Option #1 is clearly a street legal car. Option #2 may, or may not be "Indiana" legal. Both options are within $10k of each other, and are at the low end of your range allowing for misc. costs. If you do not have a truck and a trailer to go to the track with you could add them to the options below, and still be at the high end of your range. Let me know what you think. It is always a good time "spending other people's money". -Mike C. OPTION #1: Buy a street legal 355 @$70k Example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ferrari-Berlinetta-1995-Ferrari-F355-Berlinetta-Upgrades-Free-shipping_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6212QQitemZ4594211349QQrdZ1 Get a cage made for the car @$5,000 Something with removable side bars for when you want to "street" the car, and not have to climb in and out. Something with a camera mount to film track days for future review. Included in the price is install by a "professional". Sparco Racing seats in CF @6,000 Model: S Light CF As part of the project you can install. Racing Belts @$600 As part of the project you can install. Second set of wheels & tires for the track. @$4,000 - A set of take-off 360 wheels can be found for under $2k - Then add a good set of rubber to them. - Donate old "take off" tires to local park service for kid swings. Just think what the kids will think of when they find out they got a "Ferrari Tire Swing". Design a "Team Colors" paint / decal to your liking - Decals can be done for under $1k Brembo GT 332mm Big Brake Kit @$7,000 - front & rear - 4 piston, sloted 2 piece rotors As part of the project you can install. SUBTOTAL: $93,600 Assorted 355 Challenge parts - Rear wing - Front spoiler - springs etc. "Performance alignment" ESTIMATED TOTAL: $100,000 ========================== OPTION #2 F360 Challenge car $98k-$105k - www.4ferarri.com has 3 listed in that range - May be "Indiana legal" - The project could be to make it "Indiana legal" - Get a set of 360 take off wheels for $2k for street driving ESTIMATED TOTAL: $100,000+ ==========================
OPTION #1 additions Ideally, a 355 project car would have Fiorano handling package that included a dropped ride-height, firmer springs and dampers and wider track, F1 tranny. Performance upgrades: Performance exhaust= $3,000 Gruppe-M carbon fiber intake=$2,800 Chip tuning=$2,500-3,000 F50 Brembo brake kit=$3,000 (deduct $4K from your estimate) Challenge rear grill=$2,400 Custom piston, pins and rings=$?? Transmission and differential coolers= Shocks= Sintered disc clutch= Springs= Antisway bars= Three-nozzle fire system= This must put total for #1 at near $150K. I still think I can do a 360 for that, if I find the right vehicle. If the 355 is more 'fixable', it might be a better platform. Option #2- I have considered a Challenge car, although I expect the suspension is a little stiff and low for street usage. Haven't really looked into what it would take to get a license on one, but I imagine if it has the Upgrade kit rather than factory trim, it has a better chance. I need to look into this further.
The Ebay car already has the Tubi & Intake, thus taking @$6,000 off the top. If you were ready to pull the trigger soon (just in case it is headed towards meeting the reserve) you might be able to contact the selling dealer directly regarding the car. I tried to keep the "entry price" near $100k in case you needed/wanted to jump into the engine. I was not sure how "race" you wanted to go, as still being a streetable car was a main part of the equation. Also, not sure if you wanted to "sort the car out" during "Year 1" (with an entry price to play at/near $100k), then use the remaining budget to make improvments during the off-season heading into "Year 2" as you saw fit. I have not been in a 360ch vs a 360 Stradale to compare how a "true track" version would compare with a "street/track" version, but I would think it would be a similar step from a 360 to a 360 Stradale. Perhaps there are some who have driven all 3 in the "Modern" Forums, and they could give you a better idea on this. If you go the route of taking a challenge car to "Indiana legal" please keep us up to speed with the project, as I would like to hear about it. Best of luck with it.
If you are looking for a 360 track car maybe you should look at Cavallino motors website. They have several 360 challenge track cars available that are probably less expensive than the wrecked 360 you are looking at. You can still do work on the car, modify it as you wish, and drive the snot out of it at the track. If the goal is more of rebuilding a damaged car and the track aspect is secondary, I think the car you are looking at is a noble venture. I am surprised there are not more people here saying Yeehaw for saving another potentially lost Ferrari. As far as the cost, I have no clue other than from accounts I have read about. I would guess in the $20-$30k range. The panel damage does not appear to include the passenger door to me. Good luck! Keep us updated if you go forward with the project. BT
Yes, they had 3 that I used for the price range of Option #2 above. No US VIN has killed Option #2 from above. Now, back to Option #1...
Mike, I am currently in Indy. I will be in Denver later this month. I want to try to find a 355 with the Fiorno option, that would save having to rebuild the corners on a stock 355, hopefully. I don't care if its a Spider or coupe. I am thinking a Spider might be just fine since I am now leary of putting in a full roll cage due to prospect of having to drive on the street with a helmet. There are only 100 or so Spiders with that option, and almost all have the F1 tranny, which would be a good thing IMO. What are the odds? Not good, but I will look and maybe email a few car brokers. Jim
