How much work is it being a MODERATOR?

    A friend of mine was talking to me about a chat site he is working on. He was telling me how difficult it really is being a moderator.
    Alot of reading, hours and hours on the site.
    What else is involved?

    How many hours per day per moderator?

    What else I am missing?

    Depends alot on the activity level of the board. There are some days where I will spend several hours doing moderator type stuff and there are some days where everything runs fine and I don't do anything. Sometimes it is just a matter of deleting a few ads or something and I will only spend a few minutes moderating. If I'm really digging around to get rid of a troll or untangle some mess it's easy to burn through a couple hours.

    Sometimes, ferrarichat gets more attention than I do. Dinner is frequently eaten with ferrarichat. Headaches are developed over ferrarichat. Inbox is constantly receiving complaints from ferrarichat. There's some behind the scenes work too, typing up reasons for doing what they do, and a moderator forum. I don't know all the details.

    Thats easy.... you just ban everybody that gets pissed off too. Just kidding :D It certainly can take some time to deal with the ofter effects of various stuff, I usually try to tailor my moderating to achieve the desired results while keeping backlash to a minimum.

    Requirements: common sense/decency/courtesy intertwined with reading between the lines to distinguish between black/white/gray areas of content/context - all the while having a sense of humor even when last vestiges of PM box is filling with messages on a daily, sometimes, hourly basis and ability to toy with trolls before cutting them off at the knees.

    It's a hellish job but the money makes up for it a little bit.
    You'll also find tha Mark and Tom have an easy life. They only have to moderatore forums like P&R and OOT, piece of cake. You guys should come and spend a day in European, the underlying tension and malicious inuendo is enough to give anyone sleepless nights.

    Mark moderates 30 subforums, though Auraraptor and Mike C each have 17 to tend to, while jordan747_400 keeps 10 flying smoothly, wax makes a mess of 8, even though Brian C. Stradale and tifosi12 manage 7 smoothly, and Boudewijn, ghost, Ron and 6.0 se each moderate 2, all the while andrewg, bludevil12, Big red, Cavallino Motors, ClassicFerrari, dan360, paulie_b, pozzi, Rob Lay, Simon, stephens, tifosi, Tillman, Ton Visser, Wayne Ausbrooks and 360C keep 1 apiece flowing like buttah.
