Just got back from a training day at an Airfield here in the UK. I've been doing sessions there for a few years now although haven't done one for well over a year. I've done various mods to the car and have put it on a rolling road, but I've found the best way to gaugae how much faster my 348 has become is to compare my lap times. Here's what the lap looks like. Video done about 4 or 5 years ago. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2Cxmt8y8_o[/ame] Below are the Fastest laps on each visit and the modificatiosn to the car. NOTE: Although I've done many visits, I've names the ones below in sequintial order for ease of reference. First visit LAP TIME: 1'11" MODIFICATIONS: None. Car standard although rev limiter higher than standard and has F355 wheels/tyres. Rolling road figure showed 305bhp. Second visit LAP TIME: 1'05" MODIFICATIONS: Engine out cambelt change and cam timing done. Upgraded spark plugs. Rolling road figure showed around 330 to 340 bhp depending on transmission loss. Todays visit: LAP TIME: 1'00" MODIFICATIONS: 355mm AP Racing Brakes at front. Quantum Racing suspension system. No mods done to engine since second visit. Only major problem encountered today was a lot of oversteer. I could not get the back out at all. The suspension needs major update to the settings. I'm sure once done it would improve my times. (Don't schoot me) I ve been racing for years in several cars. I have "improved" dozens of cars. Bought the fastest of the lot, and had it tuned by the best of the top. You know what improved my laptimes the most? Personal coaching by a race-instructor. You see, the biggest limitation in a racecar is often the lump of meat behind the wheel... Happy racing! Ben.
Too funny, but also so true. I work in IT and the most common application problem is what we call PEBKAC. Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair.
How many laps did you run in each session? I'd be curious to see the lap time spread as that large of time difference is likely due to you getting better as a driver and not due to the small changes to the car. 25hp won't get you 6 second a lap unless it's 2 long straights with 2 hairpins...
Cam's were lined up with the markers. ooops... yes understeer. Really really bad understeer. Drove a Lotus Exige S on the circuit as well and it felt so much better. 100% agree. Around 9 to 12 laps in total I think. On the second visit, the fastest time was on the second lap and I left early due to an oil leak. Between the second visit and todays visit, I haven't done any trackdays or any tuition and I've only driven teh car for 1,000 miles in the last year. In fact, my driving was pretty poor this morning and it took me a few hours to get comfortable. Also, the track was bone dry on the first two visists and greasy/damp today. Plus my tyres today were on the edge of being illegal which didn't help. I'm also quite suprised at the large reduction of time and the circuit is not even that long!!! The instructor managed 58 seconds, so I still have a long way to go.
Understeer indicates too much REAR traction. I managed to take 17 seconds out of my early race-track performance compared to my current race trackperformance. I often run down and pass 360 F1s with r-compount tires with a F355 M6 on streets. 25 HP gain will show up as fractions of a second (say around 0.2) on a 60 second autocross course from the 300 HP starting point. So whatever advancements that accrued, most of it came from tires and/or driver.
I see. I thought maybe you would have changed the timing so that you could take advantage of the higher redline.
Nah... it was just a simple timing adjustment. Comparing my 348 with a heavily Modified BMW M3 CSL, both driven by the instructor: My 348: 58 seconds BMW M3 CSL: 53 seconds
I too noticed severe understeer in the first few Laps with my 348tb ('90). In my case, it changed for the beter after the tires warmed up AND probably skidding of the top layer (hardend over time on the public-roads) of the front tires... Maybe this is your answer? http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=351087 On my trackcar E36 M3, a bit more camber did the trick.. Happy wrenching! Ben
Getting a splitter for it, new tyres and someone else to set up the suspension settings. Test footage from the GoPro cameras. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjRON6Q3ExQ[/ame]
Nice vid! And kind a weird hearing the engine quadrafonic.... I got to get my hands on a gopro too. Did you mean the video to be exactly 348 seconds?!!?!?! I noticed my 348 is a bit lower at the front. Lowering it one centimeter does wondere for the handling. Ben
Caught your 4 view video on Youtube yesterday while doing a random search. I thought the scenery looked familiar. Nice job. One question: Do the suction mounts leave any marks? I assume they don't, but I am nervous about sticking my mount on the paint.
He suction cups will leave z circular mark but they can be cleaned off. You need to make sure both the cup and the paintwork are both clean. It also helps if he suction mount is slightly warm as well. I tend to leave it on the engine deck for a while. Personally, not to happy with the quality of footage from the gopro's. Will probably end up using dslr's on the outside in future.
