think about it...even after this guy pulled his stunt with the pennies...how is he going to pay the increase in his insurance premiums...in pennies too? it is the time in the sun right now for the police, they have incredible enhanced legal powers on their side (not arguing politics here) I have learned that in the past I could drive a few extra months before I got my inspection...now I don't ever dare pull out the driveway without EVERYThING ON THE CAR LEGAL ..you can't give the police any reason to pull you over -- and make sure you have insurance ID cards etc. (in nj they can IMPOUND YOUR CAR ON THE SPOT, if you do not have the proper NJ Insurance ID card..no xerox permitted -- yes the police do that, "get out of the car sir..we are taking your car...tell it to the judge....you can bring the card to show the judge .. i know you can't walk home but step away , I won't ask you again...)

    NYCFerraris,

I think you are stretching it a bit. I've been pulled over many times in NJ, often without complete docs - no problems like you describe. Recently state police got me speeding. The car was three months out of inspection, I didn't have my current registration or insurance cards on me. I ended up with a warning for speeding and a ticket for no seatbelt (I was actually wearing my belt but decided it was best to keep my mouth shut).

I guess the response depends on the cop, the car and the driver's atitude.

    Regards,

    Art S.

But if you have a radar detector, it doesn't hurt to have one built in to the car (like the Escort or Bel remote units) instead of one stuck to your windshield.......

its a joke, tried that once. paid in dollar bills (close to $700) for a 110 in a 55 BS ticket I got.

Bank wouldn't give me anything smaller without advanced notice.

had a expired ins card ... only a few months and a current copy of my renewal "Declaration" page from the insurance co. everything else fine....no other violation... cop stopped me to "check my documents" (figured he was just curious about the f-car) hassled me about the old ID card. I apologized and showed him my Dec page of my renewal...he said "show it to the judge and he will throw out the ticket - but I'm taking the car" it was in the evening and I got my insurance agent at home and had him fax me a current NJ insurance ID card to a neaby hotel...I then showed that to the cop..he said a fax or a copy is not valid..too bad for you but if you show up on the court date and show this to the judge he will throw out the ticket and you can get your car back. I don't know...people tell me cops are "jealous" of f-cars or some want to shake you down.. I can't believe that.. why would anyone give a damn about a f-car (an old one at that!) or commit a crime like that..but I do tell you this cop made my evening a big hassle for the smallest of legal technicalities.

    NYCFerraris,

I would have sued the cop for that. I've filed formal complaints for less! If you can demonstrate that the car is insured, that is sufficient.

Did you check your miles? Was the car driven when out of your possesion? Did you request to speak with another officer? Where was this?

and I stayed by the car so I could keep an eye on the car most of the night..it was pretty damn near weird, but believe it or not..the is the law, they can impound you car on the spot and take it of off the road --you need to have an original legit NJ ins. ID card...I had indicia of insurance in the state you'd think that would be enough. but .. the goverment has so much executive powers now..it is their time in the sun so too speak. You really can't even discuss anything with a cop since there is a statute of "interferign with a traffic cop" (not disobeying..that is another statute). ..even if you don't disobey but you ask him to permit you to make the turn or ask him anything..they nail you...they really do! If you say ANYTHING..the ticket is theirs to write.

    NYCFerraris,

I brought my car home after 5 months in the shop on Friday. Due to other commitments, this morning was my first drive. After two hours of fun I got pulled over relatively close to the end of the run. The only document I had on me was my license; the car hasn't been inspected in five years and has no front plate. When officer ran the info, he discovered that the registration had lapsed (I'm not sure that its true but I haven't done my homework yet). The cop was very nice and courteous, stated that he could have the car towed but asked me politely to drive the car home and not to use it until I got the paperwork sorted. He did give me a ticket for no registration but it was only $54 and no points - not bad compared to what he could have done if he wanted to. He also thanked me for being courteous and cooperative.

    Not all cops are bad.

    Regards,

    Art S.

Hey Art.... sounds like you ran into a decent guy.

So what did you have done that took 5 months in the shop? Hopefully we'll see you out on a run soon. I still remember the infamous 360 on the wet off ramp on the drive after the Times square shoot. Yikes!!! I hit a bump at the end of that same ramp that day too and didn't realise that I bent a front rim until I got back on the highway on the way home.

    Hi Ed,

Yea the 360 was excitement I don't want to repeat. The ride home from François' was my wife's first time back in the car since that eventful day.

Regarding the five months, actually I'm not sure what was done yet. Didn't get the bill. The reason for the delays was that there were two emergency rebuilds (250 SWB and something else) and the electrical guy took forever to show up. By the way, the clock ran for about 4 hours before calling it quits this time :) . François was happy with the car's running - said again that it runs and drives better than many, if not most of the restored cars out there (it should considering all of the mechanicals and systems are rebuilt and I've been sorting the bugs out since I've owned it). However, the car's smoking habit, which disappeared when in François hands, is still there. It must be the way I drive because François couldn't make it smoke or misbehave and the compression and leak down numbers are perfect. So we'll see.

Hopefully I'll make a couple of runs, schedule permitting, this fall (my schedule has been rough this year, my wife wanted to go to Monterey for the historics, but I couldn't fit it in - how pathetic is that!).

Sorry to hear about your wheel. Were you able to get it straightened or did you have to replace it?

    Regards,

    Art S.

It wasn't too bad... it shook a bit at speed, but it was repaired and then I put on different wheels anyway.

From what I understand, the court didn't have to take his payment in pennies. Coins are legal tender, but the occasional practice of offering large quantities of small denomination coins to pay resented debts is restricted by regulations limiting the use of "subsidiary" and "minor" coins (those with denominations of less than one dollar). Unless, of course, in this case there were no other regulations (per state I suppose).
