New potential buyer of 348. How often should the previous owner have changed the oil (how often should I moving forward) - What is the result of the person not changing the oil often enough ?

I change it once a year running synthetic regardless of miles driven.

Usually in the spring to get the car ready for driving season.

Same here. Relatively speaking, oil is cheap.

Once a year is smart, that's what I do...although if it wasn't driven much and was changed every 2 yrs I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it...

Slacker! Your 348 privliges have been suspended pending further investigation. You are now on a one year probation. This will become a full level suspension if you fail to carry out your 348 scheduled maintenance as outlined in the 348 Brotherhood handbook. You are being watched. :D

For me, once a year works. ;)

I use Redline and was only putting 1200 miles or so a year. Change it every year, particularly if you live in a cold climate. If the current owner is changing his oil at least that often then he likely cares more than average about his car.....Take it from me, trust NO ONE....get a PPI......verify ANYTHING you hear from a used car salesman - even if it is in writing.

    I know mate, I know. :D:D

My inspiration is my friend Gerry. Since buying his 1989 Porsche 911 I have changed my engine oil, flushed my coolant and changed the gearbox oil.:eek:

We go for drives, get the cars hot and do the work. If he didnt motivate me, I probably still wouldnt have done any of it till the engine out. :D:D

Which reminds me, I have to start getting a parts list together. When I changed the engine oil last week I noticed all the bushes in the rear are old and worn out. The rubber is perished/cracked in some of them. :(:(

Gunna be a $5K+ parts bill with major I reckon. But.......................ill do it once and I will do it right! :D:D

    Pic of Gerry's 911. :):)

I would say every 5,000 miles, or every three years, whichever comes first. The car holds about two tons of oil, so I don't think it is a problem on that schedule. Every year? Only if it isn't getting used at all!

Sorry guys, you know I love ya but I think once a year is a little on the ragged edge. I change mine every six months regardless of miles. There are too many nasty things that build up in oil over time like moisture, dust, contaminants, etc. Of all the things Ferrari maintenance wise the oil change is one of the cheapest and easiest.....why risk it? I think changing the oil is cheap insurance for peace of mind.

I don't have the owners manual handy but I'm pretty sure they recommend changing the brake fluid annually. Motor oil probably at least as often. I think synthetic may hold up better over time but unsure. None of my vehicles get driven many miles but all get oil changes at least annually and thats only because I get lazy. All my European products get annual brake fluid flushes. Acids build up in the oil and can attack the insides of the engines metal bits. Maybe we need Aehaas to come in here and give a lecture on what changes within oil over time.

Is this why we have so many what type of oil to use threads? Because Ferrari owners don't change their oil. I think most other groups of car guys would think we are crazy. Ask this question on a Porsche Forum. I agree that it should be done every 6 months. When oil and engine technology was poor it was 3 months or 3000 miles.

Our engine technology is still old, at least for the 80's stuff, but the oils are better today.

You have 9 quarts of oil (IIRC), and a big honkin' filter that should easily filter the oil for 5,000 miles. I don't think the oil has a shelf life of less than three years. If you drive the car once a month or more, there should not be moisture build up in the oil, and no need to change it out so often. What failure / damage has anyone heard of on a 348 from not changing the oil at a 5,000 mile interval? I don't know of anything. That 3,000 mile interval myth has really caught on, but I don't buy it. I have been doing my own oil changes on everything I drive for 30 years, and I have not had any problems from any of the cars using the 5,000 mile schedule. I think this is the kind of thing that builds the Ferrari owner reputation for being paranoid.

No, the brake fluid is not annually, but the motor oil is once a year or 10,000 miles (on a 348 anyways, I would imagine it is the same for most models)

    make that 11 :)

I change the engine oil at least once a year and after 3000 miles.
I change the transmission oil and brake/clutch fluid at least once a year.
I change the brake fluid before any track event.
I change the transmission fuild after 5 track events.
