Thats idiotic. This is California hose and it is 2 years old. That 10 year life span is up to the manufacturer. If your mechanic can tell the condition of the belt by looking he has better eyes than superman. The degradation they suffer is not visual. Ferrari recommends changing belts every 3 years? At a cost of 7-10k? I am not sure of these figures. So thats a cost of 21-30k for 9 years. If you did not change the belts at all within that time period and even if a belt did break and the valves bent and the pistons got damaged so on and so forth...........how much would you pay to have the engine repaired after a belt broke and did the damage, would it be in the 21-30k range? I kind of think it would be less. I really do not know.
GT Car parts has a long block for $8000 with exchange of your core. Not sure if that was refurbed or not...
I like cars that I can count on getting to where I am going. Philosophies like yours are why there are so many broken down cars on the road and why so many other countries are so strict on maintaining cars for the safety of other motorists.
I see that this thread has now taken it's place with the other 2,000 threads in the Timing Belt Archives for all eternity................................................ Good grief!
Lets start 10 or 20 more. A few times like that and we can bury the useful threads in the archives where no one will see them.
Come on guys !!! Just one more time , when should we change the cambelts before or after they brake??? If i keep them in the fridge can i use them again?? Can i keep the in oil during 5 years and then re-use them ?
It is unbelievable that people actually would change belts every 3 years, that is plain and simple crap, Ferrari's way of generating service for their dealers.
Based on what the belt I pulled off my ex 348 at 4.5 years looked like and the 355 I know personally that broke the belt right at under 5 years I say BS. And I am willing to bet all the people who say wait 5 years or ten years to change the belts were beating sellers up duringing price negotiations if the belt service hadn't been done within a year when they were buying their cars
Arghhhh, if I have to listen to this anymore I think I will puke all over my new sneakers. Get a freaking life. If the belts don't last at least 5 years you have another problem contributing to the condition you cheapo or your living in some kind of degraded ozone. So deal with the leaking seals that are damaging your belts and lets move on to a more interesting subject. John
Just curious who "made you listen to it?" If you get boiling blood reading a thread title, why not just ignore it? Also note - reading all of the above, I highly doubt the OP will ever have an 18th post. Just sayin.. Jedi
I think it depends on the configuration. I hear that TRs with the Flat 12 break and those with the V12 Brake. It has something to do with global warming and the rise of the Tea Party in the US.
Dear Ferraristi, Hmmm....I thought it was if you jump out of your Testarossa and yell "Freeze...Miami Vice! " too many times, the belts freeze and eventually break. Shamile Freeze...Miami Vice !
A man decided to march in the holy crusades. Concluding that his wife should wear a chastity cam belt while he is gone, he locks up her nether regions and gives the key to his best friend. He tells him, "If I do not return within four years, unlock my wife and set her free to live a normal life." So, the husband leaves on horseback and about a half hour later, he sees a cloud of dust behind him. He waits for it to come closer and sees his best friend. "What's wrong?' " he asks. "You gave me the wrong key!" So a cam belt should last at least four years whatever Ferrari says.
Personal experience : Just serviced my BB512 w/ belts. Last change dated back to ...1998 ! I've kept the former belts aside. They look just used but perfect. No cracks...
Changed my Boxer belts after 20 years, 48k kilometers. Taste like chicken (i.e., they looked like new). Did the Testarossa after 20 years. Ditto. When I say, "looked like new" I mean it. Microscopic study (still have belts in the box), careful exam of entire belt under binocular loop. Could have done 8 belts changes at $10k each. Imagine the collection of belts I would have on the wall! I suggest not buying lottery tickets, and not changing belts...do the math. One of my two opinions. Just got beaten up by Rifledriver in the Dino section, of all places, when the dreaded question arose, "Do chains ever fail?" To his credit, I feel the passion. He (Brian) is passionate about this subject. I respect his opinion, simply disagree with it. As has been said many times, my car, my money, my decision. As has also been articulated many times, "Opinions are like arm pits...everyone has two, and they all stink." Belts should be changed when you have the engine out for other reasons (fuel lines, coolant lines, leaks, etc.). My other opinion. Jim S.
