Over the past month and a half, I have had my 89 Dodge ram Van "Vandalized" about 4 times. It is parked on the edge of our drive way which is on a some what large street, On the other side of the street is an orange grove. The van has had oranges thrown at it almost 4 times, once breaking a window and tail light. This afternoon I once again look around the driveway and see orange bits stroon about. I immediately look at the van to see it had been hit. They once before broke the small sliding window that is on the bottom of the large back window on most full size conversion vans. That happened about 3 weeks ago. today, it looked as if they went for the large window on top of it but it did not break. Today, they also hit the garage door once. I do not talk to many different people, i have no active enemies, i have no suspects. I keep a tight knit group of good friends and have no new contacts. Simply, i have no idea who is doing this and what there motif is. Any idea on how i should deal with this situation? Once was bad but i still let it go, but now 4 times?

Talk to the principle of the school. Post video cameras & get faces. Sue the parents. Stake out the car & start shooting (scare the **** out of them). Talk to the principle again w/ your attorney at hand. Catch them on tape & sue the **** out of the parents that wouldn’t listen.
I have footprints on the hood of one of my cars. Get evidence.

Im not in HS anymore but ill look into it. Catching them in the act is the best evidence for sure. If it was random HS kids, i could see them doing it once, maybe twice but not 4 times. If i attack them, isnt that assault on my part? And being that im 20, and it happens to be a kid under 18, wouldn't that be assault of a minor which is an offence that will get me in jail, would it not? I would only think of using my paint ball gun but wouldn't that also be assault with a "Weapon?

This is true, and i do not have a good reason for picking it, many years ago it was just "Cool" now i am starting to second guess that choice and was going to either ask a mod to change it or open a new account......... If it is possible to change my SN, i would like to do that.

Sniper, are any other cars on the street being hit?

You might want to discuss it with your neighbors so that you have more eyes looking out for the vandals.

A video camera is a good idea.

In this day and age, yeah - you'd be the bad guy.

I grew up in an area where Orange Groves (still) rule the landscape - we had orange fights and all that - but never vandalized one bit of property, just pelted each other. Good for us.

However - as the usual suspects goes... trust me, you don't need to be 14+ to have a strong orange pitcher's arm on you, or, for that matter, good aim. We all grew out of orange-wasting by the time we were in High School, as did those who we didn't hang out with - they used BB guns to shoot windows out.

So, it ain't necessarily High Schoolers wasting somebody else's oranges, your time, money and property.

If you can, find a video camera and put it on a tripod inside the van looking towards the orange grove. Is the area lit where the van is parked? Did the vandalism occur on roughly the same night each time? If you need a source of pictures to ID the little bastards, use the yearbook from the nearest school.

You might think about installing a motion detector activated floodlight. If the vandals think that somebody is on their way out the door they might not come back.

I do not believe so. I have looked up and down the street to find no one else hit. I will talk with them though.

Wax - Iv lived in the same house all my life and never have even thrown an orange. I simply respected the owners property and income. I road my bike through the area once but thats about it. An orange does have a good amount of mass but i would think that because it is relatively soft, the energy would dissipate as the fruit breaks up. True also, if they really wanted to do damage, y not use a rock or yes, BB gun.

It's $700 or so for a decent kit with 4 cameras, recording onto a DVD that needs to be changed once every month or so. Make sure you point a camera down the street, so it has plenty of time to record vehicle license plates.

Wire mesh or plexiglass to protect the rear window and lights? An archway and tall bushes to make it difficult to hit your truck? Park it deeper in the driveway, elsewhere? A motion sensor that silently triggers an alarm inside the house so that you can sprint out and give chase?

Can you think of anyone you might of pissed off, maybe you are forgetting someone. If you have kids talk to them too, it might not even be just you. It's weird that's it's only your ride, if it were other cars on the block, OK, but they seem to be singling your car out. As far as what to do, any advise I could give would only get you in jail, i grew up in Brookyln....;)

Ohhh no John, that is the death penalty right there or at least severe dismemberment. You never touch another mans car. :( Call a man all the names you want if you have a grudge, but do not touch the cars.

For whatever inexplicable reason, at some moment in time and place, some inanimate objects just strike a "kick me" chord and become a target. With Sniper's position of being a non-bother to anyone else - such is the case in which the van is now considered the Holy Grail of targets by the vandal(s). With his friendly demeanor and reputation intact, it has absolutely nothing to do with him or his family & probably wouldn't happen any place else in the whole of his 'bur(b/g). It just is, and what it is, is mindless and destructive and needs to be recorded on film or disc, "beyond a reasonable doubt" being what it is to cop, D.A., judge, jury, overly protective parents, ACLU...

Oh, and oranges do pack a whallop.

Inside the van is a good idea. The area is quite dark, but there is a motion light with 2 large flood lamps. Its set to turn on right at the edge of the drive way. No they did not happen on the same days, i thought of that and it has been somewhat random. Year books is a great idea.

I was thinking to install another sensor in a tree near the van but i think that these guys have been flying down the road and throwing the fruit. This is based on evidence, the direction they landed, splatter patterns, thinks like that. The force needed to break that window had to be quite large, but maybe not. I am no expert on how much damage a orange can do when thrown at a stand still. But with the added velocity of driving down the road in a car plus maybe the force added when throwing it, i believe that is what it would take to break the window.

John - Wow, i could not imagine this happening to any of the other cars we have, let alone if we had a Ferrari in the house. This van is a sitting target i guess. The tranny is gone as is the PS. It is the only thing that is parked outside, i cant move it up because that will block the 3rd garage door, which i come in and out of. Right before all this was happening, i was going to post the van up for sale at $700 but then it was damaged and so on.

tvrfreak - yes i was going to setup one camera on the van and one down the street to get a good shot of the car. There is a long strait with a clear view of the road.

racerx3317 - it is very remote but yes i can now think of something. its a long story and I will go into detail some other time.

M3to360 - great item, it must be worth the bux. I was thinking to get a pair of night vision cams off ebay, 380 lines of rez, yes yes i know they are cheep, but i can not afford much more. They have IR leds, and I happen to have a panel that is a IR flood light if you will, for night filming. I can set that up as another light sorce to help the camera.

Thank you all for your overwhelming input! I am going to start documenting this entire situation, and maybe when its all over, ill post everything up. :D
