I have the suspension lights on.. I've checked the rear actuator - the gear is fine and the actuator rotates when the key is cycled on... Now I need to check the fronts... easiest way?? I've driven the car about 30 miles, cycling sports and normal mode, but the light has stayed on... Thanks
Either remove the front actuators but leave them wired up. There only held in place via a single clip. Then get a mate to check there moving when the key is turned. Or being that you said you have already checked the rears. Simply swap the rears to the front and the front to the rears, then check the new rears the way you did before. Oh and you said you checked "the acuator". There are two, one on each side. But you knew that To get to them, lift/remove the corners of the boot carpet below the window screen. But first peal back the weather/seal. Saying all that, maybe an ECU reset may work first before you test the fronts.
Yup, I meant actuators... How do I reset the ECU? unplug the battery for a little while? Or something more complex?
I have removed my actuators and set the shocks manually to about the middle, the car drives just fine. Eventually I will send my actuators for repair...
Yea thats it mate. Disconect the battery then after a little while re conect and let the car tick over for 15mins. If that dont work take the fronts out. Its very easy but be sure the ignition is of while the actuators are removed/un pluged. Or this could throw up fault codes. 2.7 units over come this problem easyer than 5.2s by the way.
DO NOT SWAP I would bet it is the top gear. make sure after you remove the acuator the gear does not spin around 360. it should lock side to side maybe half a turn. the fronts are a pain in the ass and you have to remove the inner cargo cover (easy) the hard part is reaching in and removing the old gears pin and replacing the new gear with the pin, Pm me i give give you some advise on how to do it. again the acutators do not fail that often and resetting your ECM will do nothing.
Huh? Whats with the dramatics? All four of them are exactly the same. Dont take things out of context. I recomended swaping because he had checked the rear one already. And by swaping them at least he knew the front ones were fully working, so then he could test the replaced rear ones like he originaly did. I did recomend he got a mate to look into the front first, now didnt it? And yes some times resetting the ecu can help in certain dash light glitches. If you find the front ones a PITA, then i asume you have not removed many being that you have only owned a 355 for about a year.
sorry just better advise why swap the gear when all you have to do is take off the acuator and key the car on and see in the acuator gear moves ? if the gear moves the acutator is fine. i bet if he removes the acuator he will find a broken gear on the top of the shock. no dramma just better advise
Why are you pointing out the obvious regarding the gears moving? And were did i say swap the gear? Finally i have owned my 355 from 2002 and i have had 3 actuators fail over the years (the O/S front twice), so yes they can go wrong. And yes you are right about there is the possibility of the gear on top of the shocker breaking its teeth also. Though i have never had that my self. So all advice should be welcome, just because you have had your break does not mean that it will happen to everyone. And you must certainly not say that Actuators do not fail.
Tried the ECU flash and also looked into the front actuators... Gears on front are ok, Gears on Back ok All 4 actuators are ok - teeth look fine (no breaks), cycle when car is switched on... Light is still on... Any suggestions for the next step? Is there a sensor for the shock itself that may be going bad/wire issues?
p sorry but i just am mad about some of the wrong info some people post about our cars. i am not trying to be a know it all but there is a lot of bad advice out there. ok. the gear will look ok most the time what happens is the stopper on the gear breaks causing the gear to spin 360 degrees. if you talke the actuator off and turn the gear on top of the shock by hand and it spins all the way around it is the gear. did you try that?
Yup... All 4 rotate clockwise and anticlockwise, and stop about 240degrees apart (at 4 and 8 on a clock)...
You see thats were your problem is. There was nothing wrong or incorrect with what i posted. I have done all my own servicing which includes 355 engine removals for belt changes for over 15 years. But you, you own your first ferrari for a year and straight away you diss any one with an opinion other than your limited one. So it seems it was you that was wrong twice. First by saying that actuators dont go wrong. And secondly you "bet" it was the top gear.....wrong again. I am not giving any more advice on this matter, i will sit back and watch you
ya i can see how i sounded like ******. i owned and wreched on my own race car for 10 yrs and buying a Ferrari was out of left field. i am used to my race car forums where people have a clue what they are doing so when i see people bashing this car because they have no mechanic skills and then get internet help from people with no mechanic skills ( not saying you do not have any ) it makes me mad. you can go back yourself and look at some of the advice out there and roll your own eyes im sure. sorry again have a great day.
ok good and Bad. i would think you have both good actuators and gears so with that test unkess you have a actuator that was sticking on top you are past my knowledge and i would rather say that then guess at it. Have you driven the car after you did this with everytthing back together ? my light went off after i cycled the key when i found a bad gear and replaced it. i did not have to drive the car just for your information.
No... I just cycled the engine on and off to see if they turned properly... Can they break internally and still work?
This may sound basic....and if you did it already I apologize... But.... If you start and stop the car more than three times without driving it, the shock light will illuminate becuase the car has run but no sensor feedback has been received by the ECU. I have been doing quite a bit of work on my car and this happens frequently. If everything looks right, I would button it all up and drive it around the block. It may go out once you back it out of the driveway.....
I did drive the car... THe light actually came on WHILE the car was at the dealer getting a leak fixed... so I drove it back about 30 miles, cycling the sports mode on/off, but the light is still on... Back to figuring this out next weekend...
