I changed my alternator . How do you determine belt tightness?
I always made mine to give less than say a finger. Be careful with that adjuster. Leave the main bolt on the pulley a little loose until you get the belt how you want it. Trust me on this... But if you don't, I have two perfectly welded alternator brackets I'll sell ya cheap. I may have bought the last two OEM ones in the world. Lol Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
Where are you checking tension. One longest span from water pump to crank pulley or from tensioner to alternator
My mind defaults to thoughts of bearing wear belts are to tight. Since this is more of a non critical belt, I set mine up loose and of course, it squeaked. so I tightened it a little and all is well. I would say the deflection is a finger or two on the longest belt span.
Gates clicker tension deal works great and dead on, I have a full set and a harmonic tension meter, yeah Im a belt tension gook LOL
Thanks to Tim this is what I used and its dead on. Checked it 2 ways and they were all very close. You need two if you want to do alternator and water pump because of the range and span I believe.
Does anyone have the factory spec for AC compressor belt tension? My digital WSM states this is on page I-36 but I do not have that page.
Ordered the gauge and will get tomorrow. Where on the belt are you measuring? Between water pump and crank pulley or alternator to water pump? Reaching from underneath car? Happen to know how many pounds of tension?
Good luck reaching up from under the car to get to the long section of the belt Mate, i think you are over thinking this belt thing. I have never used a device for testing the aux belt in 15 years of working on 355s.
I got both. The Dayco klicit as in the video. Was $25 for both. No room to measure the longest span with it in the car. You can't get your arm up there so will just wing it and make sure more loose than to tight.
Longest span I believe... but i haven't been under the car for that awhile. Going on my newly old man memory. Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk
Well if you cant get to it, you cant measure it or manage it now can you. Why not advice bob on how to do the impossible and get the the side of the belt. I am.willing to learn this technique.
As i was saying, you cant get to the belt with the engine in. It makes me wonder if certain people on this thread have acualy done the job, i call BS on any one who claims they can get to the side of the belt to use any device. As i said mate, dont over think it.

You're right. No way to use these gauges in the car. You might be able to measure the a/c belt but not the alternator belt. No room.
Adjusted belt . Was too loose and squealing so tightened a little and now ok. I notice on start my battery light on for 6 seconds and then goes off. Is that normal? Don't know that I remember that before.
If there was a problem your light would stay on. It should go out straight after start up. If it goes out after a short time then its charging ok. Assuming your battery has a full charge, i say take it for a run and see what it does, if it stays on then there is a charging problem. You have made sure your conectors are all secure at the rear of the alternator? Also check that you have connected the earth strap if one was fitted. Some owners have added one. Please let us know your findings.
Did you rebuild or replace your alternator? I assume that was the reason for its removal in the first place.
Replaced with a new alternator . Everything is tight and there is a factory ground strap. Will take it out in a little while
Took it out and was fine . No battery light came on duri g driving. Image Unavailable, Please Login Here is gauge im putting in to replace the clock so I'll know if it is charging. Thanks for the help
