So I drove down from PM to Miami today. When I got home the rubbery black part od the rear bumper was pretty much cooked I have tubi straight pipes on it should I wrap the exhaust or add extensions ? How do I keep it from getting toasted again ? Thanks
The best way to avoid it, is to do what most F40 owners do... trailer. 1st question... do you still have the cats?
I've got straight pipes no cats on mine too. I'm guessing you have no cats otherwise your car is running waaay too rich. If you look at various pics, you will see some have their pipes inset, or flush with the bumper. That is a problem. You want them to stick out about 1 -2" iirc; I dont have mine in the garage at the moment or I would measure them. But they should stick out a bit. I've also seen picks where ppl use metal tape on the bumper, works but looks meh
Take the cats off. Running cats on an F40 is a BAD idea. Like literally harmful for the car. It will run better, cooler, safe and more reliably w/o cats. No joke.
The black rubbery paint above the exhaust is Gone, the part underneath is ok, the area just N of the exhaust is a little burnt my exhaust tips are flush w the exit, I will have them wrapped and extended a little Trailering is for pole smokers
Completely misunderstood. Especially as the title of this thread referenced "BUMPER"! What you are speaking of is the paint peeling off the oval bezel that surrounds the exhaust tips aperture. The paint flakes off the bezel on almost any F40 that is driven, and the more you drive it, the more it flakes. BTW, even with Tubi pipes and no cats, the setting of the Tubi pipes and replacement by-pass cones which your car has - Ive seen it personally - allows extrusion of the tips by 1". However, the rear valance has a certain amount of play that is possible in setting it up upon remounting if it has been off (often not properly aligned - much discussed on the USA F40 thread, and illustrated below) and thats a possible source of the tips sitting flush with the rear panel of the valance. It may simply need to be snugged up forwards. You'll notice this when closing the rear hood and the lynch pins are not exactly aligned. I would check that before doing anything with the exhaust unit. Of course the upper hood goes out of whack also and can be adjusted - I know, we did this with one of my F40s and the net result was the bottom image... Also, if its just the bezel thats getting toasted, well, thats what its there for, and I personally wouldn't even bother wrapping the pipes as that always looks a bit boy-racer naff IMO. . I'll post some pics, I guess my car is running rich as the exhaust is very black, its not just the bezel, the paint bubbled above the bezel and well the photo will show it better
Rich is soot but lean is heat. Is the bumper sooty or burnt? First I'd get a tune. Next I'd ceramic coat the entire exhaust which will keep heat in the exhaust gases but the pipes themselves will stay much cooler . Car will run better and make more HP. Next I'd shield carbon near the pipes with cool mat and the area that the pipes exit with titanium and any area that the exhaust gas touches with titanium. Ceramic coatings come in any color including polished stainless look. We found this worked well for us. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I've seen more then one F40 when that little black piece seemed to be replaced by a stainless steel looking one. Looked good.
Sorry, my computer is messed up Here is the photo of my F40 when I arrived home Image Unavailable, Please Login
Likely less. Bill IMO you're running way rich. I'd start there. Running Rich can also cause undetonated fuel to burn in exhaust system which can result in unpleasant things. If you were too lean the inside of the pipes would be grey/white. I'd also check out Mike's suggestion. You of all people should know extra length is always good. Either way car will make more HP with Ceramic coating which you unlike some will actually use. (Pulling them on and off trailers doesn't require too much HP) Sorry I missed your little one. Great to see you. Save a Glock for me. Best
