So I want to build new engine mounts for my race 512TR to see if I can drop the engine & thus the cg by an inch or 2.

I imagine the factory engine mounts are designed so as to minimize unpleasant vibrations & noise. These obviously are not issues on a race car

What factors do I need to keep in mind when I ask my crew to fabricate new engine mounts ? Thanks

Have them make the brackets from 4130 chromoly, Tig weld, use MC-Grade filler rod. You can have them design the bracket to use the factory rubber mounts or use a hard polyurethane material. They can also make a solid engine mount, but I allways like to give the motor some play so you dont crack anything.

I would think that the engine should not be much if any below the level of floor pan.
lowering will also change the driveshaft angularity as well, it should be well within capabilities of the CVs, but can cause other issues.

I don't have a TR in at the moment, but the clearance below the driveshaft to the frame rail on droop might be an issue, but of course it's good to limit droop anyway so maybe some droop limiters f&r?

    William,

Harmonyautosport has great suggestions and i'd go with poly and dump the stock stuff. STick is WAY too soft and a compromize to sooth Mr. Sunday Driver. Brian's droop limiter is also an excellent suggestion. Excelent advice, as always, from fellow Fchatters.

I think the stock mounts for the flat 12 motors are a really good piece and would stick with them.

As suggested make new brackets for the mounts.

I am sure the half shaft to frame clearance will be the limiting factor as to how far you can go. Rear susp travel limiters might make lack of rebound an evil handling problem. I could be very wrong on that one. Susp is not my strongest area of expertise. If done well I think reducing the depth of the frame tube could be achieved without sacrificing rigidity.

If you manage much of a drop in the power unit the oil filter and oil pan will be vulnerable and you will need to take some kind of measures to avoid potential damage there. It just isn't a good idea to spin in your own oil when it can be prevented.

How about getting rid of that gear box, streching the frame, putting a Hewland on the back of the motor and a long Le Mans tail on it to cover it all up? You could really drop the motor then. :D
