How do all of the dudes that sell Xbox 360s and the fourth coming PS3s on ebay buy them in the first place? do they buy 5000 of them from japan? i just don't believe that that many people have a connection at Sony (or Microsoft, or whatever). Of course what I mean is, the initial wave of ebay sellers before you can buy them at best buy or whatever.

I've been wondering that myself. I'd love to turn a profit if I could only figure out how to get my hands on some.

I think they're probably people who would be willing to camp out overnight at a BestBuy to get the first PS3...therefore you essentially pay for a spot in the front of the line for a PS3 which comes at that huge price. I don't think they actually get it any earlier than anybody else,...but maybe im wrong because there is a limit to the PS3's you can buy. Maybe they get their whole family to camp out? Then again it's not even close to 1000 units.

i don't dought that most of these stores, have something to do with it....I heard stories of employees from Circuit city hording all the xbox 360's then selling them on Ebay...One Target I went had three come in and two were bought before the store eeven opened by Stock boys...so if you are a warehouse manager for Target Stores not to hard to make it happen

P.S. Sony doesn't have time to sell to individual places around the world, they just need a master dealer for a country to buy....for instance, my uncle is the Master Dealer for Sony Products in Zambia anything Sony has to be bought through him.....Plus it is possible to buy a production run of say 10,000 units....you just need the buyers

Most of the ebay sellers place deposits for pre-sale units at various retailers (the mass merchants don't usually pre-sale). The limit is usually one per customer per store so they go around town and place deposits at as many places as possible during the pre-sale window. The deposit is usually $100 bucks/per and some retailers start taking 5-6 months before the platform releases. Once Sony commits to an actual street date for the product, retailers will calendar their pre-sale dates. Sony will commit to wave 1 allocation quantities to their retailers and that is how many pre-sales will be allowed.

The targeted street date is still moving around for PS3 - they say 06' Q4 but I would not be surprised if is pushed out again.

Bought my 360 from a retailer on Ebay a few months before it was released.

The guy stayed honest and I payed 20 dollars over MSRP for it and had it launch day :)

    I think I'll go reserve a PS3 in a week or two.

I don't believe in buying a few and ripping people off on EBAY etc...

I heard for 360's you'd have to be in line before 3am the night before at BB to get one.

    Oh... Really?

Well as soon as they do, I'll go by GameStop or EB.

I was at GameStop 2 days ago buying Top Spin 2 for the 360, I should have asked.

How is it ripping someone off if they make a rational decission to buy it, regardless of price?! Last time I went shopping, if something I wanted was priced more then I thought was fair, i didnt pay it. Do you know something we dont about our capitalistic society?

Not trying to start an argument, just trying to understand your comment.

I don't like the whole idea of people buying purely to sell them. Means there will be lots of people unable to find them at stores.

Same as I hate selling Rolex Daytonas. Retail price is around $6,850, our cost is around $9k - 10k, just depending on the day. Market value hovers around $10,500.

No need to ask. You can go to their website and subscribe to updates for the PS3...that way you will know when they decide to start the pre-sale.

My father works at a company that is supplying one of the major components to the PS3...and.... guess what my little eye spied at their offices recently? A PS3 engineering sample.

I was looking at it wondering how much it could be hocked on eBay for were I to 'accidentally' put it under my jacket as I walked out, and weighing that against the likely fine/probation if caught. I chose to be a good guy and just smile and say "nice PS3 you got there"

Then again, if one of you rich guys wave some cayyyyysh in my face I may reconsider.

    just kidding.

    Sort of :D

    That aint worth the risk..

If that Rolex retail is $6800 and your cost is between 9-10k if i understood that post, then Rolex is ripping YOU off.

I assume you sell watches/jewelery. Is that correct?

Yeah, but those people buying them on eBay for double the MSRP want them that much more and wouldn't be able to get one if it weren't for those people preordering and flipping them for a quick profit.

It's not like fewer people are getting PS3's as a result of people's entrepreneurship. They're all getting sold to someone, period. If someone wants a PS3 for list price then he can get one, nobody is stopping him from placing a preorder in a timely fashion. If someone doesn't realize he wants one till it launches, then he's going to pay extra or do without. The buyer determines the price, not the seller.

It's like saying that buying Google at its IPO and selling it off later for a huge profit is cheating people who would want to buy it at is initial offering today. Same dern thing.
