I am trying to change the cats on my f12. After taking the under tray off, the clamps which hold the cat to the manifold are inaccessible, and even if they could be loosened, the front sub frame won't allow the cat to slide out.

The official tech info cat removal from the F tech manual suggests the front sub frame has to be removed, but that supports the engine so removing it is a serious operation akin to taking the engine out.

Am I missing something or is it nearly an engine out to change the cats???

What king of new cats are you going to install?

You are the first non-factory person I have heard of with access to an F12 WSM, so that leaves me kind of clueless. Engine out for a catalyst change does sound a bit drastic. Why are you changing them?

All the works service manuals are on the Ferrari techinfo site. You do need to subscribe but get 10 mins access per week FOC.
    https://www.techinfo.ferrari.com/tch/

The full 458 tech manual and older stuff is on here FOC All Ferraris

I want a bit more noise. Disconnected the vacum lines, then moved to a straight through muffler, now some 200 cell cats.

I have data from both, but did not realize they had added more on the new Ferraris. May have to subscribe again.

There must be some special tool/jack/lift to support the engine while the subframe is being removed. Except for the engine falling on you, removal of the subframe does not look that bad.

Exactly a cradle that is braced up top and is chained or bolted to the motor.

To answer my own question, yes you do need to take the sub-frame off. There is no special cradle / tool to support the engine available, just use a very strong gearbox lift or similar to hold it in place. Takes about 5 hours to do. Now with 200 cell cats it sounds like a current GP2 car in terms of upshifts under load (great bang/spit as it changes up), and it really screams like a 5yr old F1. Superb.
