I have done many searches on how to change my gearbox oil in a 77' 308 and have found nothing. Does anyone have a link to a thread or some advice for my local mechanic on how to do this. And since I have your attention, how do I change the brake fluid and can you suggest any good brake fluids?

    Thanks as always,

    David

PS- Where can I buy Redline 75W-90 NS online?

If your local mechanic can't figure out how to do gearbox oil on a 308, time to find another mechanic.

David - both the jobs you need to do are quite simple.

If you wish, I can explain in detail how to change all your fluids.
Feel free to call me at my office - 610 328 4000, ext 551, 8:00 to 5:00 DST.

I would suggest Valvoline gear oil - it's the best I've ever used in the many Ferraris I've serviced. NAPA stores carry it.

I would also suggest Castrol LMA brake fluid - it's the only one I use and the brakes in my 1967 ALFA and Ferrari have never experienced corrosion. DO NOT USE SILICONE.

Well, not owning a 308 I wouldn't pretend to tell you how to do it; generally you just take the bottom bung out, drain, change the washer, replace. Fill through side bung with a gravy baster. They don't have seperate coolers or pumps to deal with so it's not like a dry sump oil change.

I stand by my comment though. If I can do it, your "mechanic" ought to really figure it out.

Post #12 in this thread lists one set of correct steps:

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12621&highlight=gearbox+oil+change+308

You'll need 4 new Cu washers 22 mm ID x 27 mm OD x 1.5 mm thick (search on "Global Metrics" for prior threads discussing Cu washers). There are 2 drain plugs and 2 fill plugs -- see the GEARBOX section of your OM (or probably any 308 OM) for illustrations of the various fill/drain plug locations.

Also review the figure for the GEARBOX-DIFFERENTIAL shown in the "LUBRICANTS AND LIQUIDS" Table of Section 1 in the OM. It shows how the transfer gear reservoir is a small pool area located above the main gearbox reservoir and why you can add all the new lube into the transfer case fill hole (per step 5) -- the excess overflows to fill the main reservoir. (Although it's also perfectly permissible to put the minimum of the 0.17 pints new lube, or any amount greater, in at the transfer gear fill plug and the rest in via the main fill plug.)

There is nothing wrong with the use of silicon as long as the system is flushed of the old fluid. Silicon fluid last indefinately and as long as you dont have ABS or track the car it will be more than fine. This topic has been discussed numerous times on this forum

Just don't drain the crank case thinking it's the gear box!

Here is a thread which sets forth a procedure that I have used. It is from the website expensivecar.com:

Re: Redline 75-90 NS. try Summitracing.com and search for part number RED-58304.

I've bought the Red Line gear oil from Jegs (www.jegs.com). Sometimes, you can find it at a chain auto store or local parts store, but call around. Brake fluid, use Castrol LMA, unless you plan on tracking the car, in which case, consider a high temperature racing fluid. I personally don't like silicon brake fluid. Nothing special about bleeding the brakes. They bleed the same as most other non-ABS cars. Just be sure to pump enough fluid through to clear the lines and assure you have fresh fluid in there. Nothing gets your attention faster than unexpected brake fade.

There are a couple of tricks for successful searching:
    1) Click on search, select 'advanced search' then enter in key words

    'change gearbox oil'

select 'search 'Entire Posts' & 'Tech Q&A'.

    2) Lots more info in the old fchat. Select search old fchat then insert same words in 'search for'. select 'all words' & the 'Tech Q&A' topic, then repeat the search for 'Tech Q&A Archives'.

Repeat for 'change transmission oil' & 'change transmission fluid'.

You will end up with a diozen or so hits.
