I've cleaned these with a good solvent tank (not the water based crap), and then paint thinner, stiff brush but still looking dirty. I think it's undercoating but not dissolving with the solvents I've tried. Should I bead blast it? I was going to just spray paint it, but not sure paint will stick to the staining. Considered NAPA aluminum bright too. Any thoughts welcome. Thanks!

That's cooked on and in the pore structure of the casting. Soda blasting might get it. I don't care for glass on aluminum cast parts personally. To easy to cut thru masking and touch machined surfaces. And cleaning out the glass is not always a guarantee.

I've soda blasted them on a few that owners didn't want to leave them looking dirty. They came out ok, not 100% perfect though. Otherwise, leave it be. It's just stained and has no ill effect on the part.

Aluminum oxide layer is very tough.

There’s also an ice based process that’s perfect for parts that size which is gentler than soda, sand and glass and from what I’ve seen restores a more “as cast” look. Guys have used in on the euro cam covers which are a very smooth casting and which no owner wants to sand blast and get ruined.

I can’t remember if it’s dry ice but likely yes. It was fairly proprietary a few years ago and few were doing it. There is a thread somewhere here in 308 that discusses it and pictures included. The first guy to show it off was an aussi. I (had) found a couple places in Phoenix that could do parts under 2 feet length. So no engine blocks but cam covers etc would fit.

Try wiping or even an overnight soak in acetone. If that doesn't work, you will need acidic or mechanical abrasion, neither which is great for the casting, and would be best left alone, or just paint with a silver/aluminum look brake caliper paint.

I got most of mine out with a pressure washer, but the deep stuff is just in there. I wouldn't blast it personally since it's behind a rotor and can hardly be seen. But up to you I guess.

I also wouldn't paint it personally either but again up to you :)

This is how much you see of it when everything is installed.

I did mine with low pressure (~40psi) glass bead blast after masking the machined surfaces. Then coated with ACF50. Looks new. I do almost all rough cast aluminum this way.

That’s what I was trying to remember. Vapor Blasting. Proprietary if I recall but works perfectly on Ferrari aluminum. Started with motorcycle restorers.
