I could only find a detailed procedure for a 348 unit, which is 50% different from the 355 unit, so here is the 355 procedure. 1. Remove the pumpkin from the car, doh 2. On a work bench, remove the little square 3x3 inch cover. 4 M8 nuts, 13mm socket 3. Use a very strong impact wrench, 1/2 IR, and the tool below, zap out the large 4 prong nut. 4. I had to press out the flywheel from the pumpkin, YMMV Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
6. Turn it over, remove the 9 M6 pressure plate bolts, pry out the PP 7. Remove the clutch plate (note the direction of the knobby part) 8. Use a pilot bearing tool shown, from Autozone, remove the bearing at the center of the unit. 9. Remove the Circlip. 10. Remove the Ribe bolts from the flywheel Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
11. Improvise a puller using 2 pressure plate bolts, washers, spacers, and a metal plate from Home Depot 12. Pull out the flywheel Image Unavailable, Please Login
13. Turn the balancer unit over, remove 2 M10 plugs. 14. Remove 6 M6 bolts from the housing 15. Use two M10 x 1mm bolts to press out the balancer cover 16. Clean everything well.
17. Reassemble the balancer unit as shown with zip ties as hole guides 18. Pack it with Kluber grease 19. Put the back cover on, with the help of your 14 year old daughter to guide the zip ties through the holes. 20. pull up the zip ties, install the M6 bolts, torque to 15 Nm with Loctite 21. Install the two M10 plugs Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
22. Turn it over, install the flywheel back. Use some extra long M8 bolts to press the flywheel home 23. Install the circlip over the rod, use a proper socket and a hammer to pound the unit together until the circlip snaps into its position Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
24. Press the housing back on 25. Use an impact wrench, install the large 4 prong bolt with Loctite 26. Clean up your flywheel surface 27. Install a new clutch plate and a pressure plate (your mileage may vary) 28. Put it back in the car. Warning: you want to mark everything and put them back the same way. Just in case.
I don't think I have the cajones to try this but then again I didn't think I could pull the axle shafts either and I did great lol Thanks very much for this great write up. Not to look a gift horse in the mouth and in the interest of making this the definitive write up, could you show the install or removal of the pumpkin? Also, I've read it's common to change some seals (triple?). Maybe discuss that as well? Throw out bearing?
I don't think you mentioned the large diameter rubber seal. Did you find yours damaged? Did you re use your old one or buy a new one? I get mine from maddog clutches. Oh one more question, did you find any of your springs cracked or broken? Nice work by the way.
Badabing, I will show the install when it goes in. There are plenty of posts on triple seals so I might not repeat it. Jack and Jill, I did change the large o-ring and forgot to mention it. The old one was not damaged. In fact, the flywheel grease did not leak at all. It was just good practice to change it at a clutch job. Pressure plate spring was all OK.
Maybe someone could post a link to the best thread on the triple seals in this thread so we can have all the pertinent info in the same spot.
