Took my 348 on an airfield yesetrday and noticed an oil leak which appears to be coming from one of the rear cam seal covers. I had it fixed a few months ago, but the leak has come back and it's bigger. Only dripping when the engine is on. The arrow on the picture points to the leak. It's at the bottom part of the seal. I'm thinking of attempting to fix it myself with my two left hands. 1. Is it an easy job? I'm thinking it's just a a matter of unscewing part A and then removing part B in the pic below. 2. Could it be something else other than a leaky seal as we changed the seal before? Maybe teh camshaft ring itself (part 62)?? 3. As the gasket is relatively new, can I re use it or should I get a new one? Your thoughts please. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes I think you can do this. There is a seal in there (#62 in your photo) that is most likely the culprit - not the exterior seal (#64) but do replace them both. The interior seal has a lip on it that needs to go on straight (it is super easy to roll the edge) so confirm that several times before final assembly. Pull the air box (easier to et the tools in there that way) then pull the phase sensor (which will uncover the base and the allen bolts to remove the base) and then go after the seals. If the inner seal is the issue then you will need to press a new one into place. Note the orientation of the original seal just for good measure so that you can assemble it correctly.
you are very likely to ruin the gasket as you access the seal. You should have both on hand. The gasket is very nicely made and is not too much money. Jay
Sy, change the seal 62 and the gasket 64 and that should sort your problem.Did you not change the seal when you had the engine out ???
Sy, this is what my seal 62 looked like when I removed the sensor from my Mondial t Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Always worth replacing any seal if you have to disturb them in some way while you are doing other work.Still it's not a big job to do it now.
+2!! Cost of seals, O-Rings, etc. are usually low enough that's it's not worth the risk of re-using a used seal .
Took it down to QV London today and they did the job for me. Did consider doing it myself, but wasn't inclined to do so... which turned out to be a good idea as they found that not only were the screws not the original Ferrari ones, but 1 lengh one was put in as well. Anyway, leak stopped and next week I get the harnesses and AP brakes installed. As always...thanks for your help fellas.
