Hello All, I’ve had my 360 for a few years now, and since purchase have tried to get that F1 sound from it. The metallic shrill. I’ve had a capristo sound 1, a capristo sound 3, and have recently bought a Kline with xpipe. the Kline should sound like this (which I’ve been told is a completely standard car). Skip to 1:41 What am I missing here. I have standard manifolds and standard cats. Is it the cats holding the sound back?
Yes. Inconel will also probably change the pitch, but the stock cats are definitely muffling the sound
As someone who has gone through about five iterations of exhaust combinations, I can tell you that 1. The car never sounds the same as in the videos. It's almost impossible to get an idea of real world sound unless there is a professional sound setup and tuning. 2. You only get that sound at the top of the rev band since most of the "F1 sound" comes from cars that are pushing 19k RPM's. You won't begin to make anything near that until you're at 6k+ which isn't often. 3. The stock cats/headers do muffle the sound, but removing them doesn't make your car scream at a higher pitch necessarily. It really just makes things louder and might even make it unbearably loud if you're not use to it. Inconel does resonate at a higher pitch than stainless and is a noticeable difference.
How are you checking the sound? It'll sound different in the car than outside. On my to do list was creating some recordings comparing inside and outside before I swap headers (I have a Capristo on mine). When I'm in the canyons, the sound bouncing off the walls sounds very F1, not so much inside the car though.
On the 360 you also have to remember the Euro headers/manifolds (like in the video) are different from the >MY99 USA cars. To accommodate the pre-cats and air-rails, the header/manifold design changes a bit which will affect the sound. If you have a post MY99 US car, I would try changing the headers/manifolds to a good 4-1 setup. P.S. I also want to add that the approach/sound for F430 vs 360 engines will also be slightly different as the 360 engine has 5-valves per cylinder and the F430 has 4-valves per cylinder.
If you want "F1 sound", itntall a small displacement turbo v6 with dual 3 into one into one full open exhaust.
This was the thread that originally motivated me to by this system. https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/new-kline-exhaust-for-ferrari-360.611545/ The video title wasn’t correct and it was infact the stainless system in the video as per the thread linked above. However, my car sounds nothing like that
Definitely no cats on that car. Maybe headers as well. No way it would sound like that with just a muffler swap
I want to keep the cats, happy to go 100/200 cell. Would be good to get other examples of anyone running an X pipe with sports cats, to show if that sound is achievable.
Have checked the sound out of the car, recorded it while the wife blipped the throttle. Again nothing like the sound in the YouTube link.
Here is another car with the Kline which in the comments the publisher says is completely stock and stainless system However this video of a stainless system, says headers and 200 cell cats.
Very timely thread! I just installed my Kline Inconel catback this weekend. I’ve had 6 different exhaust combos on my car, and I think this one is finally the golden ticket for me! Im running Tubi headers, 200 cell cats, and now the Kline Inconel. I’ve previously had combos of straight pipes, Gruppe M, S-Line, Capristo Twin Sound (currently for sale in the classifieds!). They were all either too quiet, too loud, not valved, or not the pitch and tone I was looking for. In fact, over the course of the weekend, I installed the cat back with the OEM cats first. I was initially disappointed by the volume, tone and pitch of the sound in the upper RPM’s. I then swapped the hi-flow cats back in, and BOOM! F1 sound, at least imho. All the way through the rev range, it’s more melodic, sonorous and musical, and once you hit the upper RPM’s… it’s like angels screaming!! And then with the valves closed, it’s quiet, civil, yet still tuneful and musical. I could not be more pleased with the combo now. Like others said, it’ll never sound the same in video, or even in the cabin vs. outside, but if it sounds this amazing from inside the cabin, I’m so jealous of everyone who gets to hear it from the outside!
Go SLine, I put one on my F430, It sounded mega even before I changed manifolds. I tried a few that claimed F1 sound, Sline was the best sounding. Theres a 360 video with one on youtube. I am also in the uk mate....
Food for thought: there is no escaping the S-Line sound. Agreed that it’s amazing in the upper RPM’s, but the problem is it never shuts up. They make a valved version, but I can’t see how it could make it quiet enough to make a big difference. There’s only two little muffler “thingys” on the tailpipe section. I don’t think it would do the trick, but I’ve never heard it in person. You should reach out to @collegeboy. He had the S-Line with their valved system, and he also switched to the Kline. Besides having a full muffler for valves closed operation, the Inconel takes the sound to the next level. Like I said, tuneful, melodic, musical and soulful. Heavenly
"It never shuts up" hahahah like that. You are correct, I suppose it doesnt bother me low rpm, I only use the car for fun. But to be fair, it was ok on stock manifolds with secondary cats. I am obviously referring to my F430 not a 360. Assuming they would sound similar, 360 probably better...
Good points to consider. I only ever ran S-Line with Tubi headers and straight pipes (WAY too loud), and then Tubi headers with the sport cats. More bearable, but still tiring. I use my car 4 days out of every week for everything from errands to dinner dates, with everything in between. I can see if you just took it out for fun runs, where it could be a better option, especially with stock headers and cats.
Interesting read, thanks. I have just gone from stock scud with bypass, back to oem valve control. And now thinking about a valve controller or aftermarket setup. Great to hear so many experiences, keep 'em coming!
IMO, the Forza Componenti Valve Controller is a must-have. Gives you the ultimate control over what kind of driving experience you want, when you want it.
In a matter of days, I'll make a new thread as I've just installed a full Kline on my Scud.. F1 has arrived in the 'hood, BABY!
Most definitely. I love it when manufacturers purposefully show off the sound by driving under a bridge. Unless you live in a city of bridges, this is a silly gimmick. I noticed in the OP's video that all the "before" scenes have the car shifting at ~4000 RPM until the end when they want you to be impressed, then it's >6000 RPM.
I know Joe.. We’ve spoken about the S-Line before. We’re both in the Sevenoaks Car and Drivers Union WhatsApp groups.
