How does one get the horsey off the back grill of a testarossa? Want to replace or chrome plate (its black). Looks like its just pushed on, as I can't feel a nut behind the grill. Does it pry off? Is there a nut? Do I have to take the entire grill off?

Mine had nuts on studs (but I don't know if there was some variation)

Steve, how did you get to it? I am trying to feel blindly behind the emblem, through the grill, and I feel what appears to be a pointed screw? But I can't appreciate a nut. If there is a nut, how did you get to it?

This may be a dumb reply, so i apolgize if it was. But try taking dental floss and peeling it off. If it doesn't go all the way through, you know there's a screw. Plus it won't damage the paint.

bo -- Doing the swap didn't give me a lot of grief so I don't have a strong memory of it (like "did I need to have the aircleaner assembly and the heat shield out to do the swap") -- I'll have a look at it during lunchtime and post back.

The whole black grill over the taillights just comes off with four screws (two on each side). Remove gently so as not to damage the rubber pieces at each end that protect the paintwork from contact with the grill.

The horse attaches to the grill with two 10mm nuts on a pair of studs. I don't know that you can get to the nuts without pulling the whole grill assembly.

Rather than chrome the existing horse, switch to the 512TR horse. It bolts right in and looks great. Alternatively, get a silver paint pen and just fill in the engraved detail on the original black horse. It gives it some badly needed shape and looks great. My car has the 512 horse, but I took the original and mounted it to a wall in my office (with the details painted). Looks great!

Well, as usual, my memory has become "foggy" with time -- it's not the air cleaner/heat shield stuff that's in the way, but rather the black mesh grill behind the taillight grill. I now recall that I took the taillight grill off (as Charles suggested) to do the swap rather than trying to reach around to the nuts; however, the nuts and threaded studs are visible when it's all together so yours must be somehow different.

The TR SPC shows two different rear cavallino with a non-critical switch-over point (i.e., when you run out of X, use Y), so I'd bet that even if they changed the mounting stud style from some sort of push-on-stud or stud-with-clip to a threaded stud that the mounting holes would be in the same places. The green "X"s in the attached jpeg show the approximate locations of the threaded mounting studs on both my stock sculpted 110mm black cavallino and the sculpted 110mm chrome cavallino from www.black-barts.com (as shown in my avatar) for comparison.

Is yours the "flat" (rather than sculpted) 110mm black cavallino?

Charles - Can you take a pic of your black one with silver highlights you did? Sounds interesting - Would love to see it.

Here you go. The previous owner of my car had actually replaced the rear horse with the 512TR horse. Then he took this one, spray painted it silver, and mounted it to the front like 348 had. I took this one off the front (too big - looked ridiculous) and put on the regular 348 horse.

The spray paint was rock chipped on this one, so I took out some steel wool and started polishing it off. Then I noticed it wasn't coming out of the grooves and looked really neat, so I kept it that way. Now it's mounted to a bookcase in my office.

You could reproduce it faster with a paint pen, but I think it gives you some neat detail.
