I am sure there are a number of you who may be in my position. I purchased an 1980 308GTS about 18 years ago, I basically stopped driving the car in the last 6 years, the car is registered under the classic car insurance so it cost me hardly anything as an add on, and occasionally I go to the bakery on a sunday I put 1,500 miles on the car in the last 6 years, I jump start the car whenever i am in the mood to take it out, and it always starts, runs ok, but its old, old technology, old feeling etc. Now as to what to do, I have not done anything other than change the oil three times in the last 6 years, the last time the car had belts was 8 years ago and I don't intend to spend any money on the car ( good money after bad money). I don't want to sell it I have no reason to, it looks good next to my contemporary cars. What can I do to try to preserve the belts, etc, so i can get more life out of them. I realize that one day the timing belt will break and i will take my chances, I suspect the car will get almost the same money running or parts. Is there some sort of preserver that can be sprayed on the belts to keep them pliable. What do the experts say, what can we do. thanks

There is nothing you can do to get more life out of the belts. There is no spray to keep the belts pliable. In addition, lack of movement of the belts from a car just sitting can lead to the belts deforming. If you don't use the car that often and you don't want to spend the money for new belts, why not just sell the car to someone that would not view spending the money to change the belts as good money after bad, and who might use and really enjoy the car.

    Best regards,
    Dino

Change the belts yourself it is not brain surgery. Total cost with new tensioner bearings and belts is about $300. It only takes a few hours. If you are located near me I'll help you with it. Personally I would be more concerned about the age of the fuel lines. If a belt breaks you toast the engine. If a fuel line lets go it could toast the car, your house or you.

Drain all of the fluids, put it up on blocks, put a dehumidifier inside with some mothballs, put some rat killer on top of the engine and admire your garage queen. :)
