During dismounting parts under the bonnet in the engine compartment specially the plenum for major service I noticed the existence of vapor oil and fuel in the plenum which required extensive cleaning. The blow by system is the main responsible components involve in well being of the intake manifold. Other factors like driving longer distance, warming up the engine and using higher quality oil are also important elements.
Discussing the weakness of our system with few experienced engineers in the field recommend paying more attention to the rubber hoses which requires more frequent replacement. As you can see in my case with 24.000 mils the hoses are already malformed , swell up and dry out due to extensive heat produced by the engine which reduces the effectiveness of the blow by system. At one point I decided to simplify and eliminate the metal tubing and connections to use one piece rubber hose or consider replacing just the rubber hose by a hydraulic shop. John is the more experience person in the field which worked to improve our blow by system.

I'd like to improve it, too. I also had a little oil in the intake, and carbon on the valves. The hoses and tubing could be improved, but you'd still have oil getting in. I think it needs a better air/oil separator. The 575 system is similar, but has a different separator. And it also has a one-way valve in its system that the 550 lacks.

Does the 575 have the same problem? I don't know, but it makes sense that Ferrari improved the system and that accounts for the different parts. I've been thinking about replacing mine with one from the 575; the way it's mounted looks similar. Alternately, you could get an aftermarket separator, but they generally look quite different and I don't want that. Or, I've got CNC machining centers that I occasionally hijack for interesting projects. If anyone knowledgeable wanted to design a better one that fit the OEM space I'd make a couple. But the easiest solution would be if the 575 part solved the problem.

Rock, I agree, the 550 and 575 blow by system has the same diagram with one exception than it is ended in the crankcase system versus oil tank . The parts are look alike but different part numbers. Probably they are different inside. who knows, If some one has the old one to sacrifice to cut open to see what the anatomy is inside would answer the cause for failure. I believe we should pay more attention to the system as we do to the other structures and clean the oil vapor separator routinely, check the vacuum hoses and etc, etc. The one way valve is very important part which is not available any more. There are plenty plastic made one way valves on Amazon for couple dollars to replace. The system is free flow system. vacuum from plenum helps the oil vapor moves more actively from valves to oil separator and from there on is gravity dependent. From here on I will consider soaking the separator in solvent q 6 months to keep the function close to what it suppose to do.
