When I ordered my 2012 Cali, I had a discussion with the dealer on what year it would be. As the Europeans don't work with year models as we do in the US, they do not distinguish the cars as such.

So it would be possible to get a 2011, a 2011 "badged" as a 2012 or an actual 2012.
So what makes a 2012 an actual 2012 I asked.

Well, it turns out the VIN number will tell you what official year it is. In fact, the VIN will tell you a lot more.
Perhaps you knew all of this already, then skip this post.

If not, then read on as I am trying to contribute some knowledge to this forum that has taught me so much and has helped me buy my 2012 Cali.

It turns out that the 10th digit in the VIN gives the model year.
There is more info in it, but this 10th digit shows you what year your Cali is:

I've added what letters mean what year.
Hopefully this will help some people.

"year model" in the UK and in the USA has a special meaning in each market

In the UK it is important what time of year the car is registered, ie 11 reg can be a car registered in January 2012 I think

In the USA it's different again with cars registered (or is it built) in November 11 are called an MY12, ie a 2012 model year
