I have a friend, let's call him Mr. X, with a Gransport who is interested in racing another friend, Mr. Y, with a Cadillac CTS-V. Mr. Y thinks that he can outrun the Gransport in a 1/4 Mile drag. Mr. X is seriously considering this friendly challenge but is unsure of what would be the best way to launch his car in this kind of scenario. He is also unsure if there is some potential for damage to the transmission - I am assuming this would not be an issue with a just a few runs.

    Should he:

    1) Just accelerate the car from a dead stop

    2) Hit gas to rev up engine with the brake pedal pressed and then let go of the brake to launch

    3) Hit gas to rev up engine with the e-brake and let go of the e-brake (no pressing of the brake pedal)

    4) any other method

At this point, this conversation is just some friendly banter, and merely hypothetical, but if they do decide to take on the challenge, I would like to help friend X in using the proper and least harmful procedure for the best launch.

BTW, this would be done a sanctioned location, with proper safety equipment, not on the streets.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    Put in Sport mode.
    Turn off MSP.
Press accelerator part way with brake depressed to get clutch engaged but slipping.
Let go of brake and floor it.
Not great for clutch, but there you go. You can lay rubber this way....
BTW, the Maser CC(or Ferrari F1 or Lamborghini egear on the higher end) aren't designed to be great 1/4 milers, but rather track performers.

Should be an interesting race. I've owned both cars, and I'd definitely put my money on the Maser, assuming the CTS-V is stock (400hp). My personal CTS-V has an aftermarket supercharger and a bunch of other goodies that pump it up to about 535hp, so that would change the tide. The CTS-V is hard to launch also, extreme wheel hop. Be careful, be legal and let us know.

I've already done this race, the Maserati will kill the CTS-V. I posted a video a while back but took it down due to the negative remarks towards "street racing" albeit it being 2:00 am on an empty highway... Either way let us know how it happens if it ever does.

I am with these guys. The Maserati should beat the Caddy! I say for launching, just floor it with MSP on because we all know the CTS will be roasting for a while if he launches hard. The Maser will spin a bit through 1st and 2nd but MSP shouldn't hurt you if it is left on. Good luck!

I find that with the MSP off, you get too much wheel spin. I just put it in sport mode all the time.

My basis for this came about 6 months ago: guy(24-25yold) in a gransport probably 1/2 day out of the showroom, is right next to me with his head, neck and arms hanging out the car waving at me, he yells "dude your car looks cool" He couldn't figure out the deal with the vintage package and asked if it was also a gransport. I told him "no its the coupe" and he immediately goes into the "lets race mode" thinking he's got one over on me...
I beat him off 3 stoplights in a row by about the length of my hood up to about 45 mph. This is like about 6-7 feet, no big deal, but the dissapointed look on his face was not what I wanted to see a new Maserati owner feel, so I said "man, you've got your MSP off and your spinning, turn it on and I'll turn mine off and lets try again. We took off again and he took me by a good 8-10 feet, just over a 1/2 car length. His stoke was back 100%.

Before I turned off, I suggested he consider putting a few hundred miles on the car to get a feel of the paddles before redlining off every stop light. Man, I wouldnt want to be the 2nd owner of that car.

edit note: olympic blvd, 3 big lanes, no traffic, max speed was about 40-50mph between lights. speed limit is 40mph.

Thanks for the comments, gentlemen. Sounds it would be a fun race, nonetheless and I'm looking forward to seeing it go down at the dragstrip. Wish I could own a GS myself - it's a gem of a car.
