    Hi all,

Sorry if this question has been asked before and the information is somewhere hidden in this marvelous online community, but I could not find a direct answer. I would like to know how I can verify if a 355 still has its original engine and transmission.

Question 1: Where do I find the engine and transmission ID numbers?
Question 2: How do I match these against the VIN?

Reason why I am asking? This morning I inspected a 1998 355 Spider which turned out to have a 1995 replacement engine.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Ferrari keeps a build sheet on every car made. That paperwork will have the different serial numbers of components matched to a car's VIN.

Sounds sensible. Any idea on how to obtain this information? With Porsches this information is mentioned on the first page of the maintenance logbook.

On the first page of my service book is a page titled "warranty card". It has a sticker with red and black printing stating the model, importer, VIN, and engine number. Can't tell you where to look on the engine but if you are looking at a car that still has the service book you can start there for the engine.

FYI. My "engine number" is five digits and does not seem to be related to the VIN at all. (ie: not the last 5 of the VIN).

The engine number (which is located on block at the base of the oil filter for 355s) and the assembly #(which is on the left shock tower) and the last 5 digits of the Serial # do not match. You could sort of tell if the engine in your car is not the exact one, if you know the the sequence of numbers related to the year of your car ie; early 355s engine #s IIRC started in the mid 30,000s and went into the low 50,000s for '99, so if you had a '95 355 with a 49,500 engine number it wouldn't be the right engine for that year. Also it is also virtually impossible to get a build sheet on newer Ferraris I have tried. Regards, vern
