    Thanks for the post. Interesting page on the website. Actually verifies the mathematical value of the vin number once you have entered the vin number.

    great post. Does anyone know where one can find the engine number on the car? Is it in a visible spot, or is it like Mercedes where you cannot see the engine number at all?

    The old link is no longer working.

    Here is the link to the updated VIN Decoder. All credit goes to Red-Headed for this info. Red Headed - VIN Decoder

    Important remark

    Starting with model year 2010, the digits 4+5 and 6+7 are sometimes reversed, depending on the market and the model.

    Old VIN structure: 4th digit = Engine, 5th digit = Safety system, 6th + 7th digit = Model
    All models made between 1980 and 2009 (including 430 series)
    612 Scaglietti: all non-US versions, plus US version 2005-2009
    599 GTB Fiorano: all non-US versions, plus US version 2007-2009
    California: all non-US versions, plus US version 2009
    New VIN structure: 4th + 5th digit = Model, 6th digit = Engine, 7th digit = Safety system
    All models made after 2009 (including 599 GTO, SA Aperta, 599 XX and 458 series)
    612 Scaglietti: US version 2010-2011
    599 GTB Fiorano: US version 2010-2011
    California: US version 2010-present
    These VIN pages are related to the old structure. This means that if you're decoding the "new" VIN structure:
    For the 4th and 5th digit (Model), please check the page Digit 6-7: Model
    For the 6th digit (Engine), please check the page Digit 4: Engine
    For the 7th digit (Safety System), please check the page Digit 5: Safety System

    Digit 9: Check Digit

    Code Description
    A or P Specific Japanese versions (See Digit 8: Market)
    0 - 9 or X (specific calculation) North America, Middle East (>2007), Latin America (>2006) and China (>2006)
    0 All other markets

    For specific markets (see above), the ninth digit of the VIN represents the "Check Digit". This digit provides a way to verify the validity of all other characters in positions 1-8 and 10-17. The check digit is calculated by using this mathematical computation:

    STEP 1: Assign to each number in the VIN its mathematical value and assign to each letter the value specified below:

    A = 1
    B = 2
    C = 3
    D = 4
    E = 5
    F = 6
    G = 7
    H = 8
    J = 1
    K = 2
    L = 3
    M = 4
    N = 5
    P = 7
    R = 9
    S = 2
    T = 3
    U = 4
    V = 5
    W = 6
    X = 7
    Y = 8
    Z = 9

    STEP 2: Multiply the assigned value for each VIN character by the Position weight factor specified below:

    VIN position - Weight factor
    1st ------------------8
    2nd -----------------7
    3rd ----------------- 6
    4th ----------------- 5
    5th ----------------- 4
    6th ----------------- 3
    7th ----------------- 2
    8th ----------------- 10
    9th -----------to be calculated
    10th ---------------- 9
    11th ---------------- 8
    12th ---------------- 7
    13th ---------------- 6
    14th ---------------- 5
    15th ---------------- 4
    16th ---------------- 3
    17th ---------------- 2

    STEP 3: Add the resulting products and divide this total by 11.

    The numerical remainder is the check digit. If the remainder is 10 the letter 'X' shall be used to designate the check digit.

    For an easy check of the check digit go to the VIN Decoder. Red Headed - VIN Decoder

    Digit 10: Market

    The "Model Year" is only used on versions for North America, Middle East, Latin and Central America, and China.

    Code Model Year

    Digit 11: Plant

    As there is only one assembly plant for Ferraris, each Ferrari will have the same value for the 11th digit:

    Code Plant
    0 Maranello

    Digit 12-17: Seriel Number

    The last five or six digits of the VIN represent the serialnumber (also known as chassisnumber, c/n or s/n).
    Starting in 1947, Ferrari used several ranges of numbers to identify their cars, shown below in a simplified way:

    Range ----------------------------------------- Description
    002 - 1050, Even numbers ------------ 1947 - 1970: Even numbers were used for the Competitions cars, from 166 Spider Corsa to 512 S
    001 - 74999, Odd numbers ----------- 1947 - 1988: Odd numbers were used for the "street" cars
    75000 - 195000+, All numbers ------- 1988 - present: From s/n 75000 onwards, both odd and even numbers were used
    00102 - 15604, Even numbers ------- 1967 - 1980: Used for the Dino series (206 GT, 246 GT(S), 208/308 GT4)
    01 - 300+, All numbers --------------- 1950 - present: For the Formula 1 cars (and in the early days also F2 and other F-series)
    several ranges Several other types (like 333 SP) have their own ranges

    The Vehicle Identification Number was introduced in 1980, near s/n 30xxx.
    It was also used on a small number of (late production) Dino 308 GT4s, which have s/n near 15xxx.

    The engine block number is not the same as the VIN number.

    Having said that, the engine number should be on the top of the block. On a 348 it is on the top, right, rear of the block, (1-4 bank side) next to the oil filter housing. I don't know where it is on a 458 but maybe someone who knows can post it.

    Having trouble reading a VIN of a 2004 360 Spider I am looking to buy !

    ZFFYT53C000125706

    Supposed to be a UK import Feb 2004 build but the 4th digit 'Y' is for second cycle engines 1886 to 2001. How is that possible?

    I liked the vintage system.

    Fewer than five digits meant it was under Enzo’s complete control.

    Even last digits meant it wa a race car.

    :)

    Ahh ok then so it could still be correct. Ok thats good.
    This is a frustrating situation...
    Pro's....
    Very clean neat original UK delivery 2004 360 Red/cream int. Spider. 24,000 (I assume miles). No sticky bits no signs of leather srinkage on dash. No seat real wear.
    Receipts for recent clutch fluids and roof hydrolics work.
    Cons...
    He lost the manuals AND service book so no service records or history at all.
    Need cambelt service. Never done since at least 2013 when car came to Oz with very few miles driven since.
    Wants stupid money AUD 178k but knows he will need to drop. Just trying his luck I think.
    I should walk away but the var ticks allot of my boxes...

    Hi Reddesire348 I would like to know where and when it's been without history the car could be in any condition ,anyone can change interior the clocks can be doctored by a decent tech guy be careful, my cars high Kim's but came with every receipt every service and books so I know what's been done I therefore know what's due and can research how long on average parts last and have half a plan of attack regarding services ect good luck cheers adi ps if it smells of petrol At All around rollover bars during test drive it could be rollover valves and its roof off or pumps so ,no ,modern Ferrari's don't smell of fuel at all

    Thanks for that. He claims to have imported it in 2013 and only now claims to have lost the books. Has got receipts forca fluids service, new clutch and roof hydrolics so itvhas had some love recently. But at 178k he is dreaming si I have left that one alone. I need to be patient to get the right car. There is one out there with my name on it. Just have to wait until it comes my way

    What I'd like to know is how to tell if a 360/430 transmission is an F1 or a gated by its serial number.

    As far as I know it doesn’t get that detail with the vin. I’m sure the factory has a record of what gearbox what into what car.

    Forgive me guys as I really need to work on my communication skills.
    What I meant to ask is that can you tell whether a 360/430 transmission is an F1 or gated by its own serial number (the transmission serial number stamped on the transmission case).

    Got it. Not sure but part number is stamped right next to it and manual and F1 had different part number.
    Had to change one early on under warranty and new complete units came with T.O bearing. That was the reason for different part number.
    I have one here 177893 and it was F1. They have been NLA for so long the part number is getting a little hard to find in the books.
