First they started to flicker, but now the dash lights on my 550 have gone completely dark. I still have fog lights and licence plate lamps, so it cannot be the fuse. Next guess is the dash lights dimmer, mounted above the driver's left knee.

The part is relatively inexpensive, so I am going to swap it out to see if it cures my problem.

Any advice on how to remove it? I tried to push it out from behind, but it does not want to move. I'd rather not use brute force.

    Thanks for the feedback!

You need to remove the hood release handle (4 screws) and disconnect the hood cable from the handle before removing it from the dash. Once out, you can pop the switch out of the plastic surround.

Here's an excerpt from this excellent thread by user Soren: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/456-550-575-sponsored-bradan/333397-550-dashboard-removal.html

    III. Hood Release Trim Panel

    1. Pull hood release handle forward. Remove the nut from the screw securing the hood release cable to the plastic hood release handle. Using a pair of needle nose pliers or similar tool, pull release cable from the eyelet to take the pressure off the screw, then pull the screw out. Let the release cable relax back into the housing. It shouldn’t go far and should still be visible.

    2. Unscrew the two hex screws behind the hood release handle.

    3. Remove the two screws at the top of the housing, inside.

    4. Pull the hood release bezel out and disconnect the dimmer switch from the harness.

When I first got my car, this dimmer didn't work. I didn't have to remove anything else to get to it - just used a plastic trim tool from Griots and pried it right out. It was just like removing the A/C panel. Disconnect and put the new one in.

Thanks to all for the tips and advice. It seems like a fairly straightforward procedure.
