IIRC, on a Boxer, (I know, it's a different car, but assembly practices are fairly consistent across models.) This interest came about because my upholstery guy got frustrated trying to remove the H/R's and just ripped the leather to get access. I was displeased as I wanted to keep the original stuff but didn't make a fuss.

    Anyway:
The headrest is supported by two round chromed rods which run down into steel tubes welded to the seat structure. These rods have notches (to act as detents). The bottommost notches in the rods are shaped to create a hard stop against a spring wire that goes across slots in the tubes to engage those notches. If both of those spring wires are acted on, they can move in the slot and release that final notch, and the H/R will come out.

Here's the disengagement dilemma. That spring wire runs across the tube and slightly beyond. Maybe 1.5cm +/-. This is the part to act on. It is buried in the foam in the seat back. When my seats were being reupholstered, I studied the position of that wire. I got to play with it, and it was difficult/impossible to feel those spring wire ends through the leather and the foam. Even though I knew where they were and saw the assembly. (I felt more sympathy for the upholstery guy). I tried to feel for structural landmarks etc. I got it to release one time and thought....If I need to do this again....Good luck!

Maybe the 365 is different? Maybe someone has a better trick? I was thinking about a very thin wall tube slipped down along the rods for the spring wire to ride over and release the H/R? Never tried it.

Hope any of this is helpful.

2dinos, thank you immensely helpful ..at least now i have some direction to go in..as you can see the seats are very nice , i am tall and had the seat rails moved back as far as possible during the restoration and makes very hard to put the top down without “mauling” the headrest..need to make it easier to remove and replace headrests for this reason… all the best Chuck
