My '83 400i has an overhead console running from front to rear. At both the front and the rear it has two push button operated airliner-style reading lamps, that can be rotated by the user to point the light where you want it. The owner's manual calls these "adjustable spot lights." I need to replace the bulb in one, but I have no clue how to open up the assembly to get at the bulb. What's the method? Does the plastic surround unscrew? Thanks in advance.

Pop to the top. Does anyone know how to replace the bulb in this fixture? If not, my next move will probably involve brute force and, very likely, tragedy.

Pretty certain you need to remove the whole overhead console and replace the lights from the rear.

To remove the overhead console, pop out the front and rear interior lights ( the rectangular ones) - lever under the short side .

Once these are out, you will see the the 2 phillips head screws that hold the front and back ends of the overhead console in place. Remove them and the overhead console can be taken out ( after disconnecting the wires of course )

Thank you for this advice. I was truly headed for tragedy, if I had tried to pry the fixture out of the console.

With WRXmike's help I was able to remove my overhead console today. Here are the steps:

    1. Pull the headrest out of the passenger seat. Do this because, when you get the console down, you can rest it with the front end on the dashboard and the rear end on the passenger seat's seat back.

    2. Grab a small Phillips screwdrive and climb in the back seat on the driver side. I closed the door behind me so the dome lights would go out. Pop out the rear dome light, the rectangular fixture in my photo. You do this by pulling on the end opposite the switch, because that's the end where the spring steel catch is located. There are three connectors attached to the dome light fixture, buy you don't need to pull the connectors off. Just let the thing dangle.

    3. Now you will see a tab with two tiny screws in it, screwed into the roof. Unscrew the screws and try not to lose them. (I tried to lose them at least three times, but they wound up in the seat cushion, so I failed.)

    4. Now pull the console rearward, still sitting in the back seat. There are no screws to remove up front, and you don't need to drop the dome light up front either. The front of the console is retained with a tongue which extends into the windshield header trim. So what you're doing is pulling that tongue out of the header. When it comes free you now rest the console on the dash and the passenger seat back. The main wiring harness is in a black sheath and it's long enough that you don't need to pull it.

Now you can service the spot lights. It turned out I didn't need new bulbs. The bulbs are the kind with the flat ends with exposed wires, which plug into a slot. In this case the slot is located in a small round black plastic fixture, which plugs into the main spot light fixture with a bayonet style fitting, needing just one-quarter turn to release. The problem I had was with this small fixture. There are metal tabs on each side of it, which are supposed to make contact with the positive and ground wires that are soldered into the main fixture. On two of my four fixtures they weren't making contact. I bent them pretty good, so they would make contact with the bayonet fitting fully locked. I believe this has solved the problem.
