Agree, the perfect time. This is good, but...when brakes get hot, as with your particular situation, the grease gets a bit cooked. Coupled with the likely fact that bearing service may not have been done in the past, why take her apart twice for, in essence, the same job? On the QV, the front spindle nuts, which retain the hubs, are not reusable and are handed. Once the preload is set, the nuts are peened in place. Just an FYI when you go to do them... Tech tip: When measuring run-out, the most accurate reading will be when you're at the edge of the rotor, versus towards the center.
Steve, as you are my tool motivator (remember DeWalt?), I am ordering myself a good micrometer and a dial gauge, as well as a Vernier caliper. There's a hole in my tool chest there Thanks for more solid tips, David. A question though...as there are probably a hundred takes on it....what is your suggested method for setting preload/initial tightness of the spindle nut? I'm always concerned about over-tightening before first run. The nuts flying off isn't my concern, but proper bearing pressure/tension is. I'm quite sure that all four corners of my car are ready for check/cleaning/repack.
