for those of you that have sold your exotic car recently, where and how did you sell it.....our local f car dealership charges 8% consignment fee! and of course trade in values are very low so the dealerships can make a good profit...sowhat is best way to get fair market value for your car? ferrariads.com,ebaymotors, autotrader, etc and or a combo of these sites?any first hand experiences? it s always easy to buy, selling is always thougher!!!

the problem with selling directly to a third party without going through a dealer is that the car doesnt serve as a trade-in and you end up paying sales tax on your next purchase, with these cars costing as much as they do, thats a substantial amount

what you can try is talk to your dealer, tell him youll find the buyer yourself but run the transaction through him, you may be able to convince him for a lower fee though you will hvae to pay him something, dealers usually agree if youre buying the next car from them

In CA you pay sales tax on the new car anyway, so no advantage there.

When I purchased my Ferrari, I ran the paperwork through the local Lexus dealer who was only too happy to do what is referred to as an "in-out." I located the 308 in another state and arranged for the dealer to purchase it from the seller immediately prior to my purchasing it from the dealer. The dealer actually owned the Ferrari for about one minute, selling it to me "As Is." I traded in my Lexus SC on the Ferrari, so I'm sure that the dealer made a profit on the deal.

I have run at least five purchases through a Jeep dealer here in town. I've probably purchased at least a dozen cars from him so I know him pretty well.

When it came time to sell my Ferrari, I ran one ad in the DuPont Registry. I received about 40 calls from all over the place (one from Norway if my memory serves me correctly) and sold it to someone who I've seen on f-chat a number of times.

I've sold my cars either on ebay or autotrader and have had good success. You just have to be careful about all the fraud out there. I've had a least 6 stolen or fraudulant checks sent to me.

I don't know who is falling for this but it does make it a little difficult to sell your car.

    Ciao

I purchased mine after being offered on FerrariAds.com. I also kept a saved search on eBay and Collector Car Trader online. Depending on the car, the DuPont Registry may be an option, but for the car I wanted (308 QV or 328 suitable for driving) the prices in DuPont were just too high.

Personally, I was willing to pay more for a car on FerrariAds that was offered by a long-time FerrariChat member. I knew the type person that owned the car and was able to see how serious they were about maintaining the car.

Local advertising in the classifieds is also good if you live in a sizeable area with a good potential purchaser base.

I don't think I'd accept anything but a completed wire transfer on an ebay deal for a car.

Every dealer I've ever worked with will do the paper transaction to trade and then sell you car immediately without any cost to me.

They want the new car sale, even if it's a high end car, and will work with you to save you a few bucks, as long as it costs them nothing.

Here in PA, if you find a buyer, and they take the car in trade, you save the sales tax dollars on the trade value.

As to ebay. I've sold a couple of hard to find, extremely clean cars with success on Ebay, buy otherwise, it seems to be bottom feeders there.

Tax on the whole purchase price, not purchase price minus trade in value? Really? Wow. That hurts. If that was the same in WA, I may not have gotten a new car so quickly... - Tim :-|
