Call local dealer and they can usually give infor on bulid date original color and such based on s/n.

Carefax has been helpful as well on original sales and original dealer info on US cars.

If the dealer is willing to put you in touch with the previous owner, that can help quite a bit. With my car, I actually received a history document (three single-spaced typed pages) of what the second prior owner knew about the car. I plan to keep that and add to it, so that if I sell someday the next guy will know the whole story -- awards, repairs, etc.

That, in addition to service records, can help.

Check with FML. They have a lot of history of cars for sale. Your car may have been in their classifieds over the years and you may be able to get a number of a previous owner.

You can build your history from the ground up by starting here:

    Ferrari North America
    250 Sylvan Ave.
    Englewood Cliffs, NJ 07632

    201-816-2600
    201-816-2626 fax

Call them and they will send you a form to fill out. Among other things, it asks for the engine and transmission numbers as well as a copy of the title (in your name, of course).

I did this for my 84 308 and they sent me a nice letter giving me build dates, when it came to the USA, what dealer, etc. It's a neat thing to have actually. I framed mine.

    Good luck!

www.carfax.com - As my European car spent some time in the US before coming home, I went to CarFax to order a report. However, as I have neither a US State nor ZIP Code, I could not buy a report.

Has anyone from Europe done so? If so, did you just ented junk data into those fields?

    Thanks, MARK

CARFAX will only get you info if your car is a 17 digit VIN and if your car is US spec.

Carfax also has information on a number of Euro versions. Just enter the 17-digit VIN at their homepage, and you know if they have information or not (if they haven't, you will get an error that the VIN is incorrect; if they have, you see the number of records they have).
