Hi I am currently looking for a 355 GTS and here in Sweden it is not an easy task. Even with the private import from Germany it is still not that many cars around. Therefore I have taken help from a well know and respected Ferrari garage in finding a car for me.

They called me today and said thay have car coming in soon. It is a red/black 355 GTS 1996 with Tubi and 37000 Km on the clock (~23000 miles).

The car will be delivered with new cam belt service and it’s scheduled 40000Km service done. According to the dealer the car is very well taken car of by the two last owners and the price seems to be in the right range.

My concerns are: The car has had at least 3-4 owners maybe more (will check) should I see this as a problem (last owner only had it for a year)? I was looking for a 98 or 99 is it worth waiting for a newer car?

Not that i really know about 355's(sorta ;)) But im the 3rd owner of my 348 and as long as it has the complete service records/history and has been looked after,it shouldnt be a problem at all. I dont see a problem at all. Ive read on here before that its good to get a later98-99 355 over the earlier ones, but i cant tell you anymore about it sorry,im sure that the guys in the know will let you know ;)

Don't forget that most cars are serviced before they go to a new owner and little niggles resolved - therefore its quite likely that a car such as this with a few (not many) owners must have been regularly serviced - for a ten year old car to have maybe four owners is not unusual - many people upgrade especially Ferraris every year or two as finances permit - also if it isa 'respected garage' they may have even known the car for several years and being Eu have to offer an EU-wide warranty on the car so they must be fairly happy

I have answered this question many times for prospective buyers. In PPI'ing a car many factors are taken into account. I don't have a crystal ball and cannot fortell the future by looking at a car but I do take into account the totality of the cars history, including the number of owners.

When renting a car, you know you will be done with it in a few days so you do not really care about it. If the average guy buys one knowing it will be gone in a year or two the pattern is just to drive it and put gas in it. On the other hand if the intention is to keep it forever the pattern is to carefully look after every detail and need to preserve it for a long time.

Which car owner would you prefer to follow?

Cars with a lot of owners are like girls that are doing the whole football team.
    The choice is yours.

Hey Brian those girls doin' the whole football are gettin' a major service more often shouldn't they be in better shape than those that stay at home? HaHaHa. Regards, Vern

i am the 7th owner of my 308. i initially thought that was a red flag when i talked to the previous owner. but, the previous owner had the car for 7 years, won an FCA platinum award, and was by all means a meticulous owner. in the end, i let those points sway me rather than getting hung up on the number of owners. condition and the care previous owners put into the car are more important than how many people owned it.

I agree. I have owned a lot of cars, most for only a year but never more than two. Each have been cared for without an expense spared. It is just something many like me enjoy.

I look at it this way: a car that has been sold so many times has gone through far more inspections and been loved many more times than one that was left in the garage and forgotten of through the years.

The girls with all of the dates usually have gotten the most flowers.

Agreed. Nothing wrong in my mind with a car with multiple owners as long as the records are good and complete.

So many owner can be a good thing or a bad thing. Talking to previos owners and doing a PPI is the only way to be sure.

When I bought my 355 4 years ago I was shocked to see how F-cars get "horse traded". I dont know if it is instict (or just being non-emotional) but I can spot a $hitty car from a mile away.

In the 20 years of buying many cars for personal use I am happy to say that I have never been burned.

That said I wouldn't want a car with many owners but if the right one came along I wouldn't base my entire decision on that aspect either way.

Ferrari Fanatic: I agree with you about being able to spot the bad cars. I think it is easier with Ferraris than with other brands, since most parts of the car are more fragile than the average car, especially the interior. Even a car with low mileage shows some ware from what I have seen.

I have now been looking at least 12-15 355's and it is quite obvious which cars have correct mileage or havnt been taken car of correctly. But still my gut feeling say that with every owner it will be more and more likely those things go wrong. Every new owner will push the car that little extra that in the end will make a difference, I know I will ;-)

But as you say “That said I wouldn't want a car with many owners but if the right one came along I wouldn't base my entire decision on that aspect either way.”
