I'm mostly a vintage car guy, which in the Ferrari universe means narrower cars, usually somewhere in the area of 70 in. wide.

Recently, the looks of the 458 (and 488) have grown on me. But one thing I've noticed is that they look much smaller in photos than they do in real life. The 458 is 76.3" wide, which is only about an inch shy of Testarossa territory, and I think those cars are insanely wide. The 488 added a 1/2", and is 76.9" wide.

I looked up a few models and here's a quick list of widths for comparison -

    246GT - 67"
    308 GTB - 68"
    Daytona - 69.3"
    Mondial - 70"
    Testarossa - 77.8" !!
    360 - 76"
    458 - 76.3"
    488 - 76.9"

So for me, the newer F cars seem like they would feel huge on the road. But then I remember I've driven lots of old 60's American cars, which basically had living room sofas for seats and made the Testarossa look like an MGB. And lots of people drive huge SUV's, which I've never done.

So, how wide is too wide for you guys in terms of a go anywhere usable car?

Never had an issue with my 458 in terms of dimensions vs usability.

It was actually an extraordinarily practical car, with the front lifting kit basically allowing one to go anywhere.

The new cars are big cars overall. I like the size of the 355.

In the UK we have 78 in width restrictors in towns which can be a challenge so anything wider than a 308 is a pain - much the same applies on country roads

Also most garage doors are 7 ft wide which has a knock-on effect on garage width for getting in and out of the car once inside

80" is the max width for American cars until the commercial truck clearance lights are required.

I didn't know that. The super car makers are really pushing that limit these days!

Parking a mixed lot of Ferraris next to each other yields some real surprises.

A lot of small Ferraris are bigger than the big ones.

Park a little 355 next to a great big Daytona or a little 360 next to a great big BB512.

I was shocked when I read the dimensions on the Daytona. I've always thought of them as narrow and long. But overall kind of big compared to the other cars I grew up around. Compared to a 458 - tiny!!!! 10 full inches narrower and 4 inches shorter than the 458.

I could just barely get one on our alignment rack at the dealer because the wheelbase is so short.

I had a client with a BB and lived in an old home. He switched to a 360 and said he finally would be able to get in and out of the car in the garage. Wrong. it is wider.

I don't find the 599 a problem in UK, LHD too, It's quite wide at 77 1/4 inches. My biggest problem is the UK parking bays which are made for Nissan Micra's and the like. But to put it in perspective, a VW Golf GTI is 79 inches with the mirrors out.

Let's face it, we own ferraris, so we tend to also be able to buy bigger houses with bigger garages, and exactly how often do you park your ferrari in a public car park?, for me, almost never, and if I do, it's the end space, as far over as possible and far away from anyone else as I can. On road, I've rarely worried on the width of the car

My 512M feels wide. In a way my 430s, and Maranellos, do not. It's always there when you drive it here in small old England; this is a really wide car. I'd say it's too wide, though I don't love it any less for it. 458/488 seem fine so maybe the magic number is 77 inches.

Also, the Testarossa will add to the parking requirement with how deep the doors are.
I remember an owner saying exactly this being the issue when using a public garage.
If your door couldn't open into some sort of dead space, you never got away without using two spots, to the uninformed public eye just feeding the cliché of self-centered Fcar owner.
So maybe even though 4X8 come close to overall, as long as their doors are narrower they are still easier on that?

In general, so true... I have just rediscovered our 33 year old family station wagon. We used to call it the white elephant. It hardly looks like that against today's cars. A to D pillar all look fragile but at the same time elegant, entire footprint is less than our grocery getter and it even weighs less,

we have all grown a lot, but 74' is plenty enough.

    cheers
    Paul

My GMC Yukon is 81" wide. Anyone who sees it comments on how huge it is. The center console is literally a filing cabinet...it comes with rails for hanging file folders.

    I can't believe it's only 5" wider than my 360.

    And the magic number is....

75" sweet spot. On the F355.

It is also how the sides are shaped to see over closer to your edges. Some of the cars are taller blocks so extra width feels even wider.

77+" on the 599 would be tricky in urban areas and I have driven tractor trailers in the Army...

For me the appeal of F cars is the whole dimensional package, they are wide, the are short and they are low.
It just hits me in the face when you haven't seen one for a few days

I'm always surprised how much larger in general the 'modern' v8's are than it's 3x8 beginnings. They are also a lot more car-I can't imagine the power of even a 360 in a tube frame 308, but I'd take it around the track a few times of course

The TR is another category-crazy low and absurdly wide-a mid 80's f1 car with fenders at least in spirit. I don't think it was ever supposed to be actually comfortable or easy to get in or out of...and parking garages-good luck

When I moved back to Holland after a long stint outside of Europe, I was shocked how small the spaces where. Until I moved to Spain (and drove through France). The spaces in the underground carparks in both France and Spain are absolutely tiny. Am now in the UK again and the spaces are much better than Spain/France, only in small towns are they often quite small still.

I should prefer much smaller cars, but due to my own height I'm limited in choosing cars before the 550/360.
