Now that the law has been signed to have the auto industry fuel avg. to be 35mpg how will Ferrari manage to cope with this. I had heard that the new 640HP 2009 Corvette ( 15 city - 24 highway mpg) and the future GM Corvette strategy may cause the demise of the mussle cars by 2012. Now GM has a lot of different models to spread the milage game but Ferrari has a limited line. I have not seen any loop holes yet that will allow something similar to the gas guzzler tax so how will this be done. Any clues here.

    A ridiculously tall 7th gear. :):)

Honestly, I have no idea. I think the rule itself is pretty insane, as there are very few production cars that get better than a real-life 35 mpg anywhere.

They should just make a scooter that gets 100mpg to 'average' out their production line mileage...... ;)!!!

Ferrari is owned by Fiat... So Fiat already builds little cars that get big mileage and if include the Ferrari's the average of all the fleet should be just fine... Add that to the fact that billionaires won't be giving up their Ferrari's as they own the people in our government, I am not in the least worried.

Dual supercharged/turbocharged V-6 of about 2.4 to 3.0 liters with direct injection and varaiable valve timing/lift in a aluminum/carbon fiber chassis should get pretty close.

I can't believe Bush actually signed this - is he really a Republican?

In no way can Ferrari manage this... It's ridiculous!

They will pay the tax and not care just like they do now.

It's a silly law really....if people actually cared about getting 30mpg, there are plenty of cars they can buy right now that get that....but those cars don't sell......

This is why many manufacturers started leaving the US market in 1968 (and then again in '72 and '75)...

...Chances are that specialty manufacturers have some type of loophole. I haven't seen the full text of the bill, and as someone who used to work in Congress, I'm guessing that many of the representatives haven't read it fully either.

By the way, my 2002 Corvette is rated at 28 mpg on the highway, and realistically, I've been able to get 35 mpg between Olympia and Seattle (60 miles at 60 mph zone with hills). Getting 35 mpg with sports cars shouldn't be considered impossible. You'll just see them do it by reducing size and weight and increasing overdrive gearing -- as well as more stupid, annoying junk like the GM 1-4 skip-shift (that I bypassed and disabled in my car.)

I agree, shouldn't be all that tough for their 'low end' model to get 30+ yet still have respectable power. Also throw in KERS and it's possible technically. Now doing this by 2012 will be a huge challenge...

They will just divert the new Ferraris's to China and the Middle East where silly rules don't matter.

Oh, okay I see now - too bad the democrats has the majority in both Congress and House... Then again, many probably republicans voted for too.

Simple: under a negotiated clause the consumer would have to buy three cars, and the combined mpg would then meet the requirement!

The bill to allow each individual state to govern their own emissions standards was not signed, but rather a bill was signed to make it federal law rather than patchwork state law all over the country. I don't agree with either proposal, but at least the federal proposal keeps individual states from placing borderline communist standards in place. No matter what scientists say, mankind by nature changes their opinion on things. Emissions opinions will change too.

The law will actually take place in 2020. Hopefully Ferrari can handle this because i don't want to live in a country where they don't have Ferrari's.

Guys, no problem, Ferraris don't conform to the current CAFE standards which is why my 430 got hammered with a 4500. gas guzzler tax. Unless the rules have changed (I haven't heard) then we'll just keep paying gas guzzler taxes. Think of it as a carbon offset!

    I was reading the whole thread and was shocked so many people replied without commenting about it being 2020. I guess no one reads any of the major automotive magazines or watches the news. (;

As GrndLkNatv indicated early on - Fiat owns Ferrari, so, if Fiat's back in USA, all will be good until the first big wallop of a cataclysmic shift rearranges Earth's big showroom at Sunrise, December 21, 2012, when the Milky Way rims the horizon all points 'round and Earth's Odometer resets to 00000.0. That'll be a sunrise to stay up for.

The times they are a changing. Ferrari is all ready working on this. The Enzo replacement will be lighter and likely a TT V8 to clean emmisions. The era of the Monsters is coming to an end. I very much doubt we'll ever see a car like the Veyron again.

Do any of you guys think that Ferrari will start manufacturing cars that run on electricity in the future?
There is already a small company in silicon valley that produces a car that can travel up to 200 miles on one charge and the car is pretty fast.
i left a link below to their site.

    I remember getting 10 mpg in a 1980 3 litre 308GTSi.
Absolutely unforgivable with any other make.
Its time that Ferrari cleaned up their act wether voluntarily, which they have not done, or by legislation.
Remember when Enzo refused to build the Boxer for the US as he did not want to comply with emissions and crash testing.
Eventually Europe developed their own standards similar to the US ones and they had to build them to a higher standard anyway.
In the mean time they lost many sales to the States, their largest customer.

Besides, its the right thing to do.

Tru dat. However, I'm not so sure that this is such a bad thing as evidenced by the number of supercar crashes that we have been seeing. Let's face it. Just because you have the dough doesn't mean that you have the ability. :)
