How's this for a first car?

I'm looking for a first car, and I stumbled across this 86 Maserati. Everything seems to be running well on it, and I just wanted to know if there are any common issues with this type of car?

What happened to the "BMW 328, Rover, Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Durango, to name a few"?

 

I am not a fan of the Biturbo - but this is bs!!! If the car serviced by a good mechanic who knew Maserati, the car IS reliable!

btw., to answer your question: the BMW 328 became an icon, that Jaguatr copied for their XK 120-look.

If you want the Biturbo, get it in addition to a newer unmodified Japanese car. That way when it's broken or waiting for a part made of unobtanium, you'll have something to drive.

I like Biturbos, but not as a first/only car.

 

I actually like this as a first car. Reliability will be an issue, of course, and insurance will be a killer. But, if you can put up with both of those, and the jealousy from everyone at your school/university/collage/workplace, you'll be fine. Just my very limited opinion.

 

I honestly don't think many people would be jealous at a school environment..

 

The BiTurbo is one of the most surprisingly fun and quick cars you can buy for a few thousand dollars.

It is also one of the most unreliable and expensive to maintain cars on the planet!

Unless you have money to spend and another car to drive DON'T BUY IT!

It will require frequent attention and the parts are as expensive as a Ferrari.

There are probably few places near you that will even let it on the property so you may have to fix it yourself.

 

As much as i love the old Masers, i would say no.
Extremely expensive to keep in good condition.

 

It is a no reserve auction, how wrong can you go for ~$4K? I mean really, I spend that much on a weekend getaway. If you love it then get it, it may be one of those experiences that will keep you a carguy forever.....or you may want to blow your brains out all over the garage wall.

Trust me. You won't want a car you have to work on as your fist car no matter how much you think you do. As mentioned, you want RELIABLE transportation. This thing is NOT. It needs repairs already and you have not even bought the car yet. This car is a broke kid's first time car owners worst nightmare.

Buy a simple hard top Japanese car. Cars are cheap and plentyful, parts easy to get and cheap. They get good gas mileage too.

 

Hondas are fun

 

I work at Honda, and they really are super reliable. You can get a new SI, they are a lot of fun to drive for what they are. And if you buy it from my dealer, i could help ya out with service costs ..lol

I would love to, but my budget runs up to 8k at the absolute MOST.

 

If you like it and think you can afford replacement parts in the future, go for it. Not many people can say they had a Maserati for their first car.

 

Get a cardboard box and mount an old Mini Cooper engine in it. Would be terrifying as hell but imagine the gas mileage!

 

For 8k:

Get a Miata in Manual. Its a convertible, fun, cheap, reliable.

I think it is a GREAT first car! Friday night, big date, cologne, mousse in hair, running out the door looking like an Axe commercial. 5 seconds later , back in the door, " Dad, the Maserati won't start". Darn, looks like you will have to take your mom's minivan... top speed, 48mph, downhill with a big tailwind. Priceless!

 

This statment worries me. You do realize maintaince an upkeep will be a tad more then your average car right?

 

Words of wisdom. If something breaks, and it will, good luck trying to find a part in a hurry. Not a great choice for an only car.
