Wonder why no HUD (heads-up display) on any Ferrari model? Having flown fighters with HUDs where you never had to look down after take-off and five Corvettes with HUDs that were pretty good and could be improved, why has no Ferrari been fitted?

    Anyone have a real clue?

The obvious answer with GM (Corvette) was their ownership of Hughes Electronics which AFAIK is still part of Delphi.

Ferrari did such a bang up job on the Mondial and Testarossa fuseboxes , I'm sure there is a large untapped market for Ferrari HUDs.

Be happy the gauges you've got work.

They give you a HUD and next thing you know you'll be watching Oprah.

Terry, the last thing these cars need is more gadgetry of iffy parentage and little tech support. Also if you have ever noticed they piggyback on the tech devolepments for others products. The shocks on the 599 are a good example, made by Delco for the Corvette. Another example would be the adoption of something as simple as ABS. They planned and made provisions for it some time before a system used by another car and that could be adapted to the Ferrari became available. If HUD gets developed by say Bosch for Mercedes or whoever they will probably go for it but they sure will not pay those costs themselves.

Brian, JCR- Your thoughts pretty much mirror the ones I had. Ferrari has done the poor man's version with the LEDs on the steering wheel, but a good HUD is a really a nice thing to have.

Maybe in the future when, as you said, someone else pays for the development.

Not enough units overwhich to amortize the development cost of the new technology.

HUD,?? They can't even do something as simple and widespread as Homelink on the mirror or sun visor, Speaking of sun visors the one in my 355 has to be one of the worst I have ever seen.

They make great engines, and Pininfarina makes beautiful bodies.....That's it!

They're light years away from HUD

OK, my rant for the year is done, back to being Mr. nice guy...

    Why no HUD:

Most drivers should be able to figure out::
1: the relationship between engine sound and RPMs.
2: the Gear lever position with RPMs gives you have MPH.
3: your hand can figure out the gear lever position without looking (F1 need not apply)

so, there is really no need. There is really no need for a clock either.

I'd settle for non-sticky switches and a multi-function display that does not fade over time.

There are aftermarket HUD kits out there if you really want a HUD...dont know if you need some special windshield film or not...

Mitch- Once you get your acetylene headlights lit and your distributor advance set, let me know what you think about electric headlights and fuel injection.

    You guys crack me up.

There are plenty of Iphone and Android GPS speedo apps that work like a dream. The phone displays a mirror image and you lay the phone on one of those no-slide rubber mats on the dash (no damage or adhesive to dash or phone) and you can position it anywhere.

No special film needed on windshield.
